Noob question, so be nice to me!!
Got Mala working ok with a few roms i got, not all of the roms were working but i assumed this was because they were faulty or something.
Now i have loads more roms, they are in the game list but when i go to start most of them it just says 'starting' and then flicks back to the mala screen again.
The odd one will run ok.
Running latest Mala, mame .107, roms .107 (i think).
Is this the roms at fault , can i check them anyway ....etc etc.
Thanks a lot.

Run your roms thought ClrMame or RomCenter to make sure they are good (and the correct version).

Yeah do that and then try to launch a game from a command prompt (not through a FE) that you will see the mame error if it does not run.
When you have the games running properly you can go back to using a FE.

ok, first of all thanks for the replies.
Checking them using Clrmame at the moment (i think!)
So how would i run a rom from a command prompt?! sorry i probably should know!
thanks again
-
Just run mame.exe and the rom name. (Note: this is the actual rom file name, without the .zip extension)
Ex:
C:\mame\mame.exe tron

Ditto
Have you got a friend that can help you with using the command prompt?
It could take a while describing each step over the Forum.
Notes:
* Your romset matches your mame version or use ClrMame or RomCenter to fix it
* You can trying using an earlier version of mame to see if you have more success eg .89 They are available for download @ mame.net
* When you have most of your game working when launching from a command prompt use mala with the following boxes ticked (see attached pic)

ok, thanks again everyone!
so i used clrmame, it came up with the results window after the scan with loads of rom names with red crosses through. Used a guide to try to rebuild them, left it going all night!!
The roms are rebuilt in a new folder, but still dont work!
Tried to run a couple in the command prompt, same thing happens, also gives me a list of a lot of numbers not found. I guess that means that the roms are no good?
Cant really believe that i need to get a full new set though!
Will try another version of mame if you think this might help?
Gonna give in soon!!

Not on my watch :D (I just wanted to use that line)
Try .89 and .79 and lower from a command prompt. You have nothing to lose!
Get old versions from here: http://www.mame.net/oldmame.html (http://www.mame.net/oldmame.html)
The page is rarely updated,
so try http://www.mame.net/zips/mame???b.zip
replacing ???b with the version number like 089b
-
ok, tried .079 and .089. same thing happening, im thinking all the roms are f***ed!
it was the new .107 rom flood a mate gave to me, maybe its no good.
he is gonna give me a 0.84 romset he has to try out, fingers crossed they will be ok.
thanks

Wierd now....
Tried to runa couple of roms using mame32, and guess what, they work!
So does this mean i'm doing something wrong with mame itself?!
Bet it's something stupid!
Tried to run the same rom that worked, this time using the command propt and it gives me all of the files that are missing
-
Do you happen to have a merged set?
-
i dont know! what is that!
I have a folder in roms with all of the A's in ( ie aafb.zip, abattle2.zip.......etc etc)
Then a file with the B's in ....etc etc.
Tried putting the roms just in the 'roms' folder ie no subfolder, no better
-
Mame has parent roms and clone roms. Merged sets are those that include both in the zip file. If you have a full set, how many rom files are you showing?
-
The roms file is showing 6,270 files
-
I dont know how many roms makes a full 107 set, but that sounds about right.
-
Anybody?!!
-
ok, for example,
this rom runs fine in mame32 : atetris.zip
this is what happens in command line :
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.
C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner>cd c:\
C:\>mame\mame.exe atetris
136066-1100.45f NOT FOUND
136066-1101.35a NOT FOUND
ERROR: required files are missing, the game cannot be run.
C:\>

Is the path to your roms folder right in mame.ini?
-
Also check that you're running the correct versions. atetris only contains those two files, but it was recently changed. Either mame isn't finding the roms or they are incorrect.
-
Is the path to your roms folder right in mame.ini?
I think so as i have not changed it from standard, will check when i get home.
Ok, now this is wierd too...
trying it out on works computer, i have just a few roms (not the new ones i have at home).....
Some roms work in Mala that i cannot get to run on the command prompt.
Getting confused now
To get mame to work in the command prompt, is this all i need to do..
Extract mame to a folder (c:\mame)
Put roms in the roms folder
enter command prompt

withe the settings shown below mame is looking for the roms in a subdirectory calles 'roms' withing the folder you have mame eg
mame is in (c:\mame)
roms are in (c:\mame\roms)
### Windows path and directory options ###
rompath roms

That makes no sense whatsoever. Are you pointing MaLa to the same version of mame and/or same roms you are accessing from the command prompt?
To get mame to work in the command prompt, is this all i need to do..
Extract mame to a folder (c:\mame)
Put roms in the roms folder
enter command prompt
yeah see attached pic

well got round one problem...maybe you can tell me why this doesn't work:
C:\>emulators\mame\mame 88games
But this does work:
C:\>cd emulators\mame
C:\emulators\mame>mame 88games
New to all this!
So i will try again at home with the new roms and see how i get on in the command prompt.
Thanks again
-
think i have got it working now - thanks for everyones help.
Removed everything from my computer and re installed mame, put some 107 roms directly in the roms folder and ran a couple from the command prompt as above, worked fine! not really sure where i was going wrong before!
Also re installed Mala and that launched most of them too
Think the problem before may have been due to the roms being in subfolders in the roms folder.
I had set the rompath in Mala to search in subfolders which is why it was finding the roms for the gamelist. But when it came to running them, mame.exe was just looking in the roms folder.
Main thing is it seems to be working anyway!
Thanks

You had a bit of fun and learnt something too
Do you have the following set? (see pic)

As I said in another post, always keep everything as simple as possible. It makes error finding so much easier.
