Hi!!
I just wanted to hear your opinion about what you think is the BEST looking
arcade games available(and possible to run!) for mame!
Of course we're talking about bells and whistles and detail etc., but also just
good graphics! For example, I think that Commando is good-looking, because it's
clear and easy on the eyes.
But mostly I'm thinking about games like Dancing Eyes and 3D.
So, let me hear!

Pac man.

Has to be Demolition Derby.
-
Mars Matrix: Hyper Solid Shooting... Playable, fast, and looks very nice.
Unusual in that its a vertically scrolling shooter made for a horizontally mounted monitor.

Firstly this isn't a software question so this type of polling is probably best suited to another forum.
Secondly there isn't any possible way a person could answer your question as it's too subjective.
Just to give you an example, I would list commando as one of the worst looking games ever. Given it's time frame the game had technology available to make it look really good. What we got were a player sprit that looks and moves exactly like enemy sprite and levels made up of 6 to 8 tiles just thrown down at random. Also animations of 3-5 frames per character, which is just laughable.
For me games couldn't have good graphics until the early 90's anyway, when there was enough space on the boards to make stuff actually look like stuff, instead of some super-deformed pixelated icons that suggest what the character is supposed to be. Also animation. Good animation is key.
I think the first example of a game that really looked good would be Final Fight. Each character looked different and had different animations. Each level looked different. Not only that but the levels had detail in them and things were there just for asthetics, rather than a platform to jump on or a crate to break. It was the first game where as much time was spent on how the game looks as the gameplay contianed in the game.
Also I don't really see the point in the question. If you are wanting to play games because of how they look you sure found the wrong forum. I think brophog and horseboy's tounge-in-cheek replies kind of elude to that fact. ;)

I think Snake Pit's graphics from 1984 are just great :)
-
I've always liked the looks of the Metal Slug games.
-
Doesn't get any better than Street Fighter 3, or for games that are emulated - Garou Mark of the Wolves.
-
I think a good example of a "best loooking game" in terms of "nuances" - those little things that give a game it's 'style' - would be Marble Madness. I remember playing the home versions and being disappointed that the "little things" were often missing. This includes the way the marble regenerates, the munchie licking it's lips, the magic wand, etc.

Garou - Mark of the Wolves has beautiful graphics for a Neogeo game.

I' d says for the old generation :
Popeye
Jungle King
Donkey Kong
Donkey Kong jr
Donkey Kong 3
Ghost 'n goblins
Rainbow Island
Pole Position
More recent :
Out Run
Twinkerstar sprites
Metal Slug (1 to 5 and X)
That the ones i think now. But there is ton of good looking game. ;)

I'm appalled Pac-man isn't on the list. I shalt add it for you.

When you start talking about good-looking games in their time I would definitly have to throw Galaxian in their. I remember when that game came out and was amazed at the colors and detail in the aliens. You're talking 1979 now, and games just did not have that look yet. I was nine and and the pizza place my family went to had one. I would just sit their and watch it, half the time not even playing as I did not have the money, while waiting for the pizza.
