Title: Xbox MAME and keyboard encoders
Post by: shmokes on August 07, 2006, 04:16:17 pm
Does the Xbox version of MAME support keyboard input?  My brother built a control panel with an Ipac and became interested when I told him that the Xbox controller ports were just USB ports that are shaped different and that I have some adapters I could give him if he wanted to hook USB devices up to it.  He immediately asked wheter that meant he could use his control panel with it, but I couldn't say whether the keyboard drivers were left in the Xbox one.  I assume they are, but can someone verify this?

I'm not sure. Ultimarc does make Ipac console adapters that change it into joypad inputs, though.

Yes.

I have the phantasy star USB plug from microsoft (that plugs into the controller's memory card slot) and I am able to use a keyboard.

However, for my cab I got the iPac -> xbox converter which I'd recommend over a keyboard hack.

But if you're looking to make a controller that plugs into an xbox you should be fine with a USB keyboard.  Assuming you have a USB cable for it to connect with.  =)

Well, this control panel uses an Ipac, but should he need the adapter just for MAME?  Doesn't an Ipac look just like a keyboard?  I thought that adapter was just so you could use the Ipac with Xbox games.

Apparently you would have to buy an adapter to use a keyboard anyway, so why not buy the ultimarc one so you can play regular games with the cp as well?

Well, first because the USB adapters only cost like $5 and second, because I already have a bunch of the USB adapters because they are bundled for free with a lot of mod-chips.  I'm guessing the Ultimarc ones are more expensive than $5.  Or if they aren't, like I say, I've already got the little USB adapters and would rather not spend any money if I don't have to.

Thanks

Well, then.

From what Slycrel says it sounds to me like it should work.

Yeah, I think it should.

But I'd still recommend the xbox adapter, IIRC the new ones have analog joystick support.

totally depends on what you're doing with it though.  If you already have the USB adapter you could....  just try it.  heh.

Genius. That probably should have been the first course of action.

Well, it'll happen.  But it's actually my brother in California with the control panel.  I'm going to mail him an adapter.  But if someone knew it wouldn't work I wouldn't bother.
