I got this idea at a local business in a theatre room they had set up. Here is a stock photo of the basic idea, but it's not exact. Anyways, I wired my basement with an outlet above the ceiling tile that has it's own light switch. This light will have red string light inside that will shine on the ceiling. Kind of a neat effect for parties or watching movies. It's made out of 1/2" pressboard, and is very basic in design. It really doesn't have anything to do with arcades so I'm not real sure why I posted other than I thought some of you guys might dig the idea. It's goes with "The Varsity Club" theme.

Here are some pictures of the build phase. It took about three hours from start to finish before puddy and sanding.

Nice work so far. Not exactly sure what you are going to end up with but I'm sure it will be cool as usual. ;)
-
its the "O" for ohio state buckeyes!!!!! Woot Go bucks!
-
You got the sickness my friend.
I acutally grew up about 5 minutes from Ohio State up till about age 9. Still have good memories of Wetstone park fireworks on the fourth. My dad is still a Buckeyes fan.
-
What can I say? I always loved them growing up and then graduated from there. I'm hooked. :applaud:
-
How 'bout some more pictures. I like the occasional non-arcade project on here.
You not done with this yet?
-D
-
I am getting my carpet installed as we speak. I routed the edges of the "O" to give it a roundover affect. It is completely ready for priming and painting.

Ahh the life of a self made zillionaire. Must be nice that you can just surf the net and watch the grunts install carpet.
-D
P.S. Just kidding. I'm getting an pool put in right now so I have no room to complain. I'm a happy camper. :)

An Ohio State football player was nearly killed in a horrible horseback riding accident. He was thrown off the horse and almost got trampled. Thank God the K-Mart manager came out and unplugged it. AND FINALLY TONIGHT, NEWS FROM OHIO STADIUM ... Football practice in Columbus was delayed on Friday for nearly two hours. One of the offensive players, while on his way to the locker room, happened to look down and notice a suspicious looking, unknown, white powdery substance on the practice field. The head coach, Tressel, immediately suspended practice while the Ohio SBI was called in to investigate. After a long and labored analysis , the Ohio SBI determined that the white substance unknown to the players was only lime used to mark the goal line. Practice was resumed when the SBI decided that the team would not be likely to encounter the substance again. GOOD NIGHT FROM THE BUCKEYE BROADCASTING NETWORK....
Sorry McCoy you know us evil Wolverine fans

This is one of those comments that just doesn't come off good in text. I'm reading it and I'm wondering... is he just being a jerk or is he giving McCoy a sarcastic jab. Hard to tell. Perhaps in an inside joke, and if so, it should've been done in a PM.
Either way - I like the project McCoy! It's time for an update I think.

McCoy knows darn well that I am an MSU alum (we've gone back and forth about it in the past). At any rate, I'm sure my Dad (OSU alum) would approve! ;)

Sorry for the hijack, but I think you will approve McCoy!!
Go Bucks!!

I have gone back into business and it has takin most of my time...
Don't you hate it when work gets in the way of you hobbies? Good luck on your endeavor & don't let it consume you.

Go Irish!
-
This is gonna be cool. I got nothin' to add to the football conversation though. Providence College really wasn't known for its football.
Now Rick Pitino....
-
That was a great first half. Let's hope they hold.
-
Okay, the light is finished! I will have some pics up a little later. Oh yeah, I went back and read all the threads, don't hate us because we're so dang good, hate us because we look so dang good doing it.

Okay, so I skipped a couple steps in the documentary process. I did prime the piece and paint it Aluminum(I need to add another coat because of smudges). I also routed over the edges to give it a smooth finish. I used wood putty on all the holes also. Now, onto the pics:
I measured the room and put four eyelits in as strategic spots as I could find. I predrilled and installed them. I wrote down the measurements to transfer onto the block "O".
I used extra pieces of wood from the garage that were left over from cornhole boards to give the eyelits extra wood to secure into. I glued and nailed them into place.

Next, I secured the rope light to the piece with the little clips that come with it. It worked out rather well. I used a zip tie at the end to hold the excess to the original.
I then turned my attention back to the ceiling and secured the wire to hold the light and drilled holes directly under where they are to go. I then pulled the wire through. I will say cautionary statement: Don't get your head near picture wire as it may pull some hair out! Yeah, it hurt and I cursed. :dizzy:

I then attached hooks to the end of the wire to catch the eyelits. I also drilled a hole for the power. (I would like to mention that I did put an electrical outlet in above the block "O" area before installing the drop ceiling.

Here is the finished product. I hope you likey. :applaud:

Very nicely done. I have one question for you. How many times did you wrap the rope lighting around the "O"? I am in the process of building a poker table and wanted to make the track part light up. But wasn't sure if rope lighting would be bright enough. But from your pictures it looks really good. Again looks great nice job.
-
Thanks for the compliment! I wrapped it around once. It was an 18' strand. I have also done this around a soffit I have in my pool table room and once was plenty of light.
-
Nice compliment to your machine. Not to big & gaudy, but definitely there. The halo effect looks very cool with the lights dimmed.
-
"Cornhole boards"? :o
Wow... am I glad I'm not a Buckeye. No cornhole-ing for me... thanks. :laugh2: :laugh2:
In all seriousness, great job.
-
Pretty swanky, McCoy. :)

-
Cool. I have always been a fan of the big 'O.'
-
:applaud: Looks sweet!
BTW, if anybody's looking for cheap ropelight, Wal-Mart carries it around Christmas time and it's pretty inexpensive. If you wait until after the 25th it gets REALLY cheap.
