Sorry to sound like a newbie. I've had these for months, but setup my MAME & Pinball and just never looked at them before!! (It's hard to play thousands of MAME games, but I'm up to the challenge!)
In my NES_SNES3 romset. I have subfolders for GoodSNES [2.04] and GoodSPC [2.01] also within a subset of the NES folder I also have Famicon Disk System, GoodNES [2.01], and TOSEC.
In my SEGA set, I have GoodGEN [2.05], GoodGG [2.01], and GoodSMS [2.01].
What are these designations? Where can I get an explantion of these folders and what emus to use for them?
-
Did I ask an inappropriate question or just too stupid?
Could really use some help or a link. thanks again.

For your NES roms you will ned a NES emulator
http://www.emulator-zone.com/doc.php/nes/
I questioned a fe other forums a few weeks ago and Nestopia or FCE Ultra are the popular choices...
I havn't played around with both enough to decide which I like better so you may want to try them both
-
What are the different subfolders for?
(IE: GoodSPC [2.01] also within a subset of the NES folder I also have Famicon Disk System, GoodNES [2.01], and TOSEC.)
I'm assuming I'd use the NES Emu for GoodNES, what about the others?
Same goes for the SEGA folder.
-
They are different system and set designations.
The [2.xx] part is the version of GoodTools used I believe, or the dat file used. It designates what "version" of the roms is included in the set. I'm not 100% sure on that part, but it does designate the roms in some way.
the "Goodxxx" part designates the system.
GoodGEN is Genesis
GoodGG is Game Gear
GoodSMS is Sega Master System
GoodSNES is Super Nintendo
GoodNES is Nes
Famicom is the japanese name for the NES, so your famicom set may be the JP releases of NES games.
TOSEC is a newer naming convention similar to GoodTools.

Ahhhhhh, the fog is lifting now.
That makes more sense.
Looks like I'll be hunting for some more EMUs.
What is SPC? (ie: GoodSPC also in the NES_SNES folder).
-
Sorry to bring back an old thread but I have the same question.
Do you need to load both the GoodNES and TOSEC or just one? I think I just need the GoodNES right? Also where can I find out what the best rom version to use? Is there a maws for nintendo?
-
I would just use the good sets. they are almost, if not complete. http://www.allgoodthings.us
I just sort them and delete stuff i did not want on the arcade machine.
-
What's the difference in roms then, I have like 5-10 with the same name but with a different characters at the end? Any idea?
-
If you are talking about MAME I'd say that was for the different bootleg roms. I am not sure about NES though.
-
I am talking about NES
-
Uhh, (J) apanese (E)uropean, (U) America for starters....
Or so I hear..
You could give one a clue as to what characters are on the end....?

yeah, sorry I was at work when I asked.
OK, that explains a lot but what about these?
(U) [01], (HES), (VS), (U) [b1]
I am guessing (U) [01] is USA with a newer dump? It least the I have an idea of what ones to use now. Thanks

Included in every download of GoodTools is a file called GoodCodes.txt which explains the codes. Reposted here for your enjoyment....
