Take a look at this:

http://img107.imageshack.us/my.php?image=finishfrontle1.jpg (http://img107.imageshack.us/my.php?image=finishfrontle1.jpg)
Two things:
1) It seems the tape I used to go around the coin doors has become one with them. I can use some touch-up paint to fix that though; and
2) What is the best way to clean up the coin doors? I wasn't about to just paint over them (that would look bad I would think). I'd love to get them looking better; finally,
3) What kind of lock am I looking for? It looks like they drilled a hole for the lock next to it. (I can take another pic if you need it). Just wondering what I should put in there.
Thanks in advance!

Its called a channel lock.. Home depot has them... Theres two sizes. Most doors are 7/8".
FYI- On one of my coin doors I had to take a 1/4 inch off the latch to get it to work... Use a ban saw.

Sweet, thanks!

Not sure how much effort you want to put into them but I used different grades of steel wool to smooth out the door and remove rust / old paint. Put several coats of primer lightly sanding inbetween then several layers of paint sanding inbetween. It took just under two weeks to complete (due to the curing time of the primer / paint. As far as the lock goes just look in the lock section at Home Depot, should be able to pick one up for $3-$5.

Thanks. I would like to put effort into it, just because if I'm going to do it, I might as well do it right :) I just found this over at RetroBlast, so I'm going to give it a look:

I actually stripped my coin doors of all paint first, it is a pain, but I think it is worth it. Then I sanded down the rusty parts and used a hammer to bang out any dents. Then I simply cleaned it real good, and hit it with rustoleum spray paint 3-4 times. It turned out real nice.
Details and pics of the process are here:

Use the BLUE masking tape to mask off everything.

I just used Goof-off to get rid of sticker residue/gunk and then a wire brush to get rid of the rust. The I hit the whole thing with Rustoleum Appliance Enamel. Whole process took maybe 20 minutes and I think it looks pretty great:
Here's the pic of the door when I bought it:

Here's a couple pics of the door now, the thing is so shiny it's difficult to get a decent shot:

Banacek:
Rule #1 is always do things the right way.
In this case it would have meant removing the doors and door frames. If you feel inside, you'd see it's mounted with bolts.
#2: Masking tape is too sticky for paint jobs. Use the green or blue painting tape.
I still think removing the doors will make it much easier to clean up.

I didn't realize the doors came off so easily. I've since removed them.

Now that they're off, I'm going to redo the front and the doors. The thing about the tape is, I bought Painters Tape. And it wasn't the cheap stuff too. I mean, I got it in the painters section. I think the Arizona heat is what really made the tape melt like that. At least that's what I think :)

The thing with painter's tape is...you don't leave it on there. You put it on, paint, and then remove it while the paint is still wet.
Common misconception is that you leave it in place until the paint dries. Simply not true.

Now you tell me :) Anyway, I did some sanding and some painting today. I used Rustoleum Textured Black on the doors. Here are the results:

Apparently a drop of paint landed on the bottom door (you can see it in the bottom middle):
(http://img122.imageshack.us/img122/9011/doorbottomjh8.th.jpg) (http://img122.imageshack.us/my.php?image=doorbottomjh8.jpg)
I didn't like how that looked so I sanded the door down and painted it again.

Here's pics of the front. The area around where the doors go is indented. You won't see that line once the doors are mounted.

I got to thank you guys and RetroBlast for the help...

That looks really good!
-
Just curious if you've tested the paint at all to see how well it stands up to minor abuses? That was the main reason I chose the Appliance Enamel paint, figured that stuff would be plenty tough for this application.

Looking good :applaud:. The extra effort will always show in the end.

I didn't test it, but when i went to sand the second door down i really had to work at it, and this was only a few hours after application. Rustoleum seems to be pretty solid. :)

rustoleum is a good brand....and I found brands matter when it comes to spray paint
