OK some basic lexan questions. What is the difference between Lexan and Plexi? I hear from many sources that Lexan is better so I'm wanting to use it on my CP. Where does one purchase this? What is the price difference?
-
You can get it at Home Depot. It is more durable than plex. Is far less prone to crack. It is very easy to work with.
-
price difference is like 3 times more..
You can get a piece of plexi for $9 while the same size lexan would be around $30.
I personally dont have any problem with plexi glass but I would still say go with lexan(easy to drill holes and no worry about cracking the lexan like plexi).
-
There's a price difference but nowhere near as drastic as what Snaaake is saying(unless its a regional thing)
Home Depot has plexi in say 24x30" for about 4-5$
I ordered online lexan in 12x24x1/8 for about 6$
plexi is fine to work with for straight lines- razor score it and snap, give it a little polish on the edge and it's good
lexan is a lot easier for using tools, saws, drills, etc it really does cut just like wood

Where did you get this online Lexan?

Yea, My Home Depot didn't have Lexan (they only had 1 brand of plexi at all) I think this was because it is a pretty wealthy nieghborhood and thier focus seems to be on faucets and Sh!d.

Check out my thread
lexan vs. crystallite http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=5452
anyhow.. both are polycarbonate.. I went with the crystallite which is not as nice as lexan but still pretty darn good :D works like a champ so far...
i've use plexi (not on CP's but for other things) and they do crack quite easily if your not careful!
I would go for lexan all the way! Or crystallite if your local home depot has that too.. (mine had all three lexan/crystallite/plexi)

$3.25/sq ft for 1/8"

Brad, by your own post you actually verified Snaaake's pricing. If a 24x36 (864 sq inches) piece of plexi costs you $4-5 and a 12x24 (288 sq inches) piece of lexan costs you $6 you are paying almost exactly 3 times more (per sq inch) for Lexan than plexi. Also if your local Home Depot doesn't carry Lexan (and the ones around here don't) then $30 is about right for 24x36 piece from a shop who specializes in it.

P.S. Snaaake... I'm done defending you for the night... not my intent, but just worked out that way. Maybe next time I'll join the flaming :P Oh and Brad I'm not referring to your post as flaming... Snaaake's been involved in another thread that for some reason I felt I needed to defend him on then saw this post.....

sigh..
my maths have failed me :)
I geuss my point was that price shouldnt be a prohibitive factor in deciding between plexi & lexan. For my CP i have lexan, for my monitor "glass" i use plexi, and plan to switch to smoked plexi when I get my TV up n running.
just make sure that the material matches the application

Math Rules! 8)
I would agree Lexan for the CP is the way to go hands down, unless you are an ultra tight budget and even then I'd probably try to find another place to skimp and still get the Lexan.... personally I'm three times more likely to screw up a piece of plexi than a piece of lexan! ;D

well, you have been really nice for some unknown reason ;D.
appreciate that ;D.
I dont know if Brad Lee was trying to start something here too but I didnt say anything at this "PROVING ME WRONG" thing.
Whatever man,I dont care. :P
I mean its comon sense if you ever been to home depot that lexan almost cost 3 times more.
Anyway its all good with you defending me.. ;Dheh heh ;D
