Ok, I started talking about an old idea I had on the ugly cab thread, but since we have been kicking around a few ideas on this, It deserves a new thread...
Anyway... you can check this out to get an idea...

also, take a look at my rough draft of the ghetto cab...

If anyone is looking to make this project into a reality, I will not be making this cab, so I am open for anybody to captain this project. It's Mamey worthy if done right.
Otherwise, We could use fresh ideas on how to make the one of the most hilarous cabs ever concieved.

This project has me thinking of the red/green show. I am sure most of you have seen it before. The duct tape wrapped around the entire cabinet is classic.
I feel this project should be done in a very design intensive manner. IE, everything should be fully functional just like a real cabinet, but done in a non-conventional, half-a$$ed fashion.
I am sure everyone who has built cabs for a while gets bored, and this could be a project that everyone could pitch in an interesting idea or two.
Here is my idea, followed by a design challenge for someone else to figure out:
I propose using old used light switches for some of the buttons. They would be functional, easily mountable, and would definitely work the same as a pushbutton, but in an unconventional manner.
Design Challenge:
A "coin hole" as proposed in the picture, that would have some sort of recognizing mechanism that would really recognize a coin input when you chuck in your coin (or other object of similar size)
-
Yeah, I've been pondering the coin hole thing too. It really has to have the feeling that you are just chucking in the coin rather than sliding it in a slot. My best idea on this is to somehow make a coin funnel that leads to a coin mech

Maybe some type of motion sensor?

Dude!!! Those metal wires they have on crane games to let the machine know when a prize is given
-
I say put part of a chain linked fence as the other side of the cabinet and bling it up with some christmaslights with some non functional sections.
-
The joystick handle should be a rusty screwdriver.

Kind of like a trip wire?
Now, did you guys plan on sorting coins and to verify whether it's a quarter or not? Could always rig up one of those coin sorting trays with the various sized holes to sort a coin when it falls... and you'd get a really annoying trashy sound when it was happening, too.

and then put the trip wire under the quarter hole, right? If we go a good model of coin sorter, we could rig it so that the other coin sizes get tossed back out via a chute
-
Its a ghetto cab. You should be able to throw a wadded piece of gum thru the hole and get a credit. Remember the trash fuel thing from back to the future? I've always wanted something like that. This would be as close as we could get... :laugh2:
Another idea I had was to require you to reach thru a punched out hole in the door side to turn the machine on.
-
how hard would it be to get a tilt switch to turn it on? i think it would be funny to just give the thing a good smack to get it to start.
Then again, I also see the thing turning off in the middle of play a lot because of that feature (although that would definitly make it more authentic)
-
And then after hitting it you could do a Fonzy like "heeyyyy".
All the chicks would swarm man, SWARM.

I kicked this idea around last night, but wasn't near a computer to submit it. Also, I figured it would be bad for the cabinet. If this cabinet were to be disposable (which I'm sure it would be eventually) then it is definitely the optimal way to turn it on.
-
We can probably use the lightbulb pullchain to turn it on, or use another lightswitch.
Or, we can make it not even turn on at all, what more ghetto than a crappy broken "arcade machine" :laugh2:
-
I like the lightbulb pull-chain.
-
I'm surprised no one mentioned the "Etch-a-sketch" monitor idea.
MUST hang a clip board to the side of the cab so players can record their high scores.

A coin door made out of cut up tin cans.
-
real centipede...

real centipede...
and a real mappy :lame:
-
no such thing as a mappy. perhaps you have a mouse that thinks it's a pig? :blah:

on the same vein, attach a sensitive tilt switch to 'T' to activate tilt on any games that have it...
-
What about having the coin door ocassionally throwing something out at the player, like an old chicken bone, or squirt of water. Incorporate some basic counters/timers.
-
Ha. I think fill an arcade machine with insects, mice, and chicken bones will have a few undesireable side affects... :laugh2:
Might as well call it "Ghetto Petting Zoo"
