Title: Any AZ BYOACers want to help me out?
Post by: Banacek on July 25, 2006, 02:35:26 pm
Hey guys, I'm looking for help cutting the holes in my CP and the Plexiglass I'm going to put over it. The thing is, I'm an ASU student and I really don't have any tools out here with me. Basically, I'm trying to avoid having to buy a drill and a router. If anyone out there is in the area and is willing to help me out, there's a cold 6-pack in it for you. :) Thanks in advance!

(I know ASU has a wood shop, but I have no idea if they'd let me into it. I'm not a art student.)

first off - you want a drill. You'll use it the rest of your life. I can understand the router. I tell you what though - I use the hell out of mine. Been the surprise tool for me.

Second - this is art! They should let you do it!

My college had some crazy liability thing that you pretty much weren't supposed to be in any classroom that you were not currently enrolled to be in. You definitely want to check if it is ok for you to be there, even if you find a student who has access.

Oh.. flea markets and rummage sales are great places to find tools dirt cheap if you are short on funds. I got a drill at a flea market for $1 and it works great.

Oh, I know that I need a drill. I guess it's about time to bite the bullet on that. A router, on the other hand, I really can't justify. And I didn't want someone to do it for me. I figured I swing on over and we'd work on it with your tools  ;D

Well you could rent them at the Home Depot.

Well, I took a trip to Harbor Freight and got what I need. The only thing I can't seem to find was a 3/32-inch 3 wing slot cutter.

Good for you!

As for the 3 wing slot cutter - a 1/16" one from MLCS works good. Do yourself a favor and get a flush trim bit as well.

What do I need the flush trim bit for?

The flush trim bit is good for a couple things. It's great for cutting plexi. If you plan on using plexi for your marquee or control panel. Also, it's great to cut out patterns you already have. Here is a picture of me cutting with the flush trim bit. What I've done is create what I wanted to cut and used this bit to trace around and create an exact. This is very useful when cutting the sides of your cabinet - you cut 1 side and trace the other with this bit.

Now, if you already have both sides cut and have no need for cutting identical peices - using it to cut the control panel is a good clean way to cut holes in your plexi. You can read my project announcement to see how I used it. While I'm waiting on parts, I documented the cutting of my CP plexi.

If you still decide you don't need a flush trim router bit. Thats fine and dandy. I've been very surprised how handy it's been. Good luck!

You probably don't want a 3/32 slot cutter. If you are using 3/32 spinned T-molding, you actually want a 1/16th slot cutter so it snugs in there. Check out www.t-molding.com for more info.

I am planning to use plexi, but i have the piece already cut out and ready to go. But I'm still very confused about this whole process. I have the CP piece cut out and the plexi piece cut out as well. I see how you're tracing, but I don't think I need to do that. That being said, I think I'm ordering the bit. I'd rather be prepared than be caught with my pants down. Has anyone else felt just a bit inadequate when it came to woodwork? :)

See, I was going by the Project Arcade book, which recommended the 3/32 slot cutter. I saw 1/16 solt cutters that I could of got today.

Here's a question: the CP on the cabinet I'm working on is square. What is the best way to work the t-molding to cover the whole CP? Should I round the edges?

Page 385 of the Project Arcade book discusses this and there is a picture on page 386.

Oh man, I don't have any room, or else I'd be all over that. :( I wish this house had a garage and not a car port.

As a University of Arizona alum, I am not allowed by law to help you. I am only allowed to point and laugh at your lack of tools.  :laugh2:
Plus, I live in Chicago now. Good luck though.
