Title: Simplest way to proper resolutions/scan rates when using a laptop w/JPAC?
Post by: MartyNg on July 24, 2006, 03:17:46 pm
I just got my JPAC in the mail. I want to hook up my laptop (temporarily) to my JAMMA arcade cabinet. I realize that there are a million different front ends/utilities/mame variants to get the proper resolutions at 15KHz out to the arcade monitor. I couldn't find much info on whether using a laptop requires any special considerations.

What do you guys think is the simplest way? I plan on building a desktop PC with an ArcadeVGA card in the winter, so I don't want to spend weeks configuring all of these different programs just for a few months of play time.

Laptop specs:
Pentium M 1.8 GHz
512 RAM
WinXP Home
Onboard Intel "Extreme Graphics 2" video

Arcade Monitor: 25" Wells Gardner

Thank you very much for any pointers!

Don't think it is possible to create 15KHz output from a laptop. powerstrip doesn't support laptop graphic chips and other tools requiers DOS or linux.

Unless your monitor support 31KHz your only hope is TV-out.

Uh oh....I was pretty sure I read a few posts about people using laptops to arcade monitors...I'll have to do a little more digging!

What specific model WG monitor are you using?

Unless you have a mutlisync monitor I think your stuck.
You would more than likely have to use something like this:
http://www.ultracade.com/hardware/18/uvctrade (http://www.ultracade.com/hardware/18/uvctrade)
Run it straight to the monitor.
I don't believe you will even have to run it through the JPAC at all.

Think of it like an exrenal Arcadevga graphics card.
And if you went this route, I don't think you would need the Arcadevga card anymore for the desktop pc setup either.

I don't personally mess with much of the MAMEing type gadgets, so maybe one of these other fellas can explain it better.

I'm using a 25K7191 monitor, which I think said 15-16.1KHz. You had a good idea, but unfortunately, it looks like that Ultracade product needs the 4-pin power connector that is on a desktop computer. Perhaps I'm out of luck after all.  :(
