This is some pretty huge news IMHO. We're all geeks here, and the combo of AMD and ATI can mean really big things (or a huge disaster)
Figure in how well AMD has done in the past few years, and how AM2 was/is likely to not do so well against the new Intel Conroe chips and it gets even more intriguing. It's definitely an interesting time for AMD to do this.
Plus, as many of you may know, AMD and Nvidia had a pretty strong relationship with AMD using a ton of Nvidia chipsets.... it's pretty safe to assume that will change. That makes it even more interesting as most people would argue that Nvidia has better chipsets when compared to ATI.

If you'll allow me to talk to myself for a minute...
Looks like Intel already announced it's pulling the chipset license from ATI. No more ATI chipsets for Intel boards after this year.
looks like we may have a distinct line drawn by next quarter...

doubtful in my opinion. I think this is actually a bigger deal for ATI than it is for AMD. AMD needs this to better compete with Intel and to become a more well-rounded chip producer... previous to this their portfolio was lacking compared to Intel. ATI though, needs this to get a better hold on the chipset market...Nvidia doesn't need that as badly IMO.
Intel on the other hand is in a bit of a restructuring and cost cutting mode as it finally tries to do something about AMD eating up some of its market share.
I doubt highly that Intel will buy Nvidia, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if Nvidia jumps at Intel and tries to form a contractual or business joint venture so that it doesn't "lose ground" to ATI.
Also, Nvidia is arguably doing better than ATI right now in the video card market, and is almost undeniably stronger in the chipset market. A partnership of some sort would be better for Nvidia IMO than an outright purchase/acquisition.
Plus, keep in mind.. this entire deal is largely based on motherboard chipsets.. that's where the interesting future will be. Video cards will remain the same. AMD/ATI won't come out one day and say their video cards ONLY work for AMD... it'd be suicide. Same for a Nvidia/Intel M&A or partnership... its the chipsets that will be looked at. And Intel already has a strong chipset division, whereas AMD did not.

Kinda been going on for a while. Note all the "Played best on INTEL" and "Nvidia they way its ment to be played" Adds on seemingly every PC game anymore.

yup, but nothing official. With this acquisition, and the official bail out from ATI chipsets for Intel, now would be a good time to actually turn that parallel marketing into a business partnership.
If you ask me though, there's very little chance that will turn into Intel BUYING Nvidia though... I just don't see it happening.

Yeah at best i could see a "merger" of some sort, but Nvidia does to well on its own to NEED a company like intel or amd to help them.

Has anyone noticed the new lower AMD CPU prices? The 3500 is down to $100, and the x2 3800 is down to $165

The prices are very competitive in the low to mid range areas, but once you get to the higher chips, AMD loses a lot of ground. The new Core 2 Duo's are trouncing the AM2 chips, and a few of the AM2 chips are hardly a bargain compared to the new Intel chips.
