i bought a cheapo usb pc game pad today with analog controls on it so i could play afterburner. i havent tried anything in the analog realm before (other than just plugging in a sidewinder to play a flight sim). i fiddled with a few settings in mame but it still reads the analog inputs as on/off. can i actually use this for what i want? if so what am i missing here? something obvious no doubt...

Make sure the stick is analog in the windows gaming control panel.
Make sure you don't have the joystick set in mame's -digital setting.
Unmap the stick from ad stick .. DEC/INC.
Map the stick to ad stick .. analog.

I bought a logitec USB for $20, works right out of the box (but I'm on a Mac). Even has a button on the pad to switch analog on/off.
