Ok, I thought I would just post this up because I've been living with it for so long.
My favorite game of all time is Stargate, I used to play it practically every day after school when I was 9 years old. By age 12 I was able to get into the millions on a consistent basis. By age 14 there was not a Stargate machine to be found. I guess thats when the home consoles caused convenience store owners to yank most cabs out of their stores. So now it has been almost 17 years since I have played it (excluding Mame which is near impossible to play) I've played Defender as recently as last year but its not the same (too easy)
Anyway, for the long 17 years I have had so many dreams of playing the game, but oddly enough the dreams never took place in an arcade. Most of my dreams involve me playing the cab OUTSIDE and at NIGHT. It could be in the middle of a dark corn field or in a ditch in back of my old high school.
Now that I am close to completing my cab, I am pondering taking it outside one night and playing in the backyard with a few cans of beer to mimic a dream state. I'm sure that will draw some stares from the neighbors kids.
Am I crazy? Anyone else have weird dreams or fantasies of playing cabs in unusual places or situations?

Replace 'playing' with 'having sex with' and 'cabs' with 'chicks' and I'm right there with you. Otherwise... your crazy. Not only that, you must live in a part of the country that isn't 110 degrees.
Seriously though - I want to play a game of Pengo in the winter on a frozen lake.

Actually the strangest arcade experience I have had was in Monterrey, Mexico at night. I was there attending a wedding with my parents and was about 11 -- and as kids go, didn't care about the wedding, so I slipped out of the hall and did a bit of exploring. Half a block away was this run down taco stand but wouldn't you know it, they had some cab back there LOL. So there I hung out in my sunday best with a few other locals playing it. To be honest I don't remember which game it was, but I remember it was horridly boring, but better than the wedding hehe.
Ah I remember when there was a mexican coin that had the same size and weight as the US quarter, except that with the exchange rate you could get about 30 of them for a dollar. HEHE >:D Too bad they discontinued the sucker.

I've played Defender as recently as last year but its not the same (too easy)
Defender is "too easy"? Holy hell. Maybe you should try TGTS. Judging from the record scores on each game, it looks like Stargate is harder than Defender, but not by much. The record for Defender is a little over 200,000 and the record for Stargate is a little under 200,000. I'd say they both get pretty hard at the 200,000 point range.

The Last Starfighter movie had the game outside. I say why not? Just make sure you can get it back in under cover quick if it rains...

Defender and Stargate.... The two (more like 1 1/2) greatest arcade games ever created! ;D I was so into Defender in college that I had a professional sign maker paint the Defender logo on the bug shield of my CJ-7.

Well, I specified TGTS (Twin Galaxies Tournament Settings). Under more conventional settings, like the OP likely uses, i.e. "Marathon" settings, the record is some 80 million for Defender and about 71.5 million for Stargate.

DOH!!! No it's an April 1st Joke..... There was no Defender3 even as a prototype. Look at the screen shots, where you'll see "Wally" from the "find Wally" books and if you look hard enough, you'll also see R2D2, they'd never have got a licence to include that.
There was a Defender 3D that was produced on home computers that never made it into arcades.

Yea I mean regular settings (extra life every 10k), as they had it in the normal arcade. Maybe its just me but Defender I could play until I exhausetd myself, while Stargate my highest score was about 2.4 million. I dont think you can really compare the two games under TGTS settings because while I think Stargate is harder, you can score many more points and warp, etc. It takes approx one hour to score a million points on Stargate.
And if anyone can manage to play stargate using ANY controller other than the original control configuration, and still kick ass -- you rock. Me? i am building a dedicated CP.

Yeah, that's what I figured. There's certainly nothing wrong with that, I'm just saying that for more of a challenge you should use TGTS ... maybe you can set a new record.

That's a good point. I figured they were roughly similar in scoring because they are such similar games, but I suck at both of them. My hat goes off to anyone who has mastered Defender or Stargate, because for most of us, those games are downright brutal.

I use a Playstation controller on my PC with a USB adapter. I have it set up like Defender played on the Atari 2600, i.e. left and right on the joystick controls thrust and reverse. But, like I said, I'm no good at either game. If I owned a real Defender machine I'd probably take the time to get good at it though.
Defender was before my time in the arcades. I started playing arcade games when I was 9 in '84 and by that time, Defender machines were long gone from the places I went to. The neighbor kids who were older than me by 4 and 6 years always talked about Defender though.
The BYOAC member "D_Zoot" has a nice Defender at his shop, and when I was down there to pick up a machine the other day, it was the first time I'd ever played Defender on the real machine. The controls were interesting to say the least, and it took me a minute just to figure them out, but I can see how they could grow on you.
Your best bet is to build a dedicated Defender/Stargate control panel like you mentioned.

MY cab is in the garage. I have on several occasions opened the big garage door and pulled the machine outside. The neighbor kids went nuts especially when they found out no quarters were involved. Theses hot summer nights make for some great outdoor gaming. Play how you want. Your cab!
