Title: DAM Jukebox (Retro MAME Style Jukebox) FREE !!!
Post by: Steve on July 19, 2006, 06:17:24 am
I've been after a "Jukebox" old 80's style for a dedicated MAME type cabinet, so after speaking to a mate of mine he decided to make one for the both of us  :applaud:

The design is based on the old school type and does not have every feature under the sun (as it was not required) so he designed the following:

http://www.damjukebox.vze.com (http://www.damjukebox.vze.com)

Best of all, it's FREE !!

I'd be keen to hear from you guys on what you think of it.

I'll post up some dedicated cabinet pics of it in action.

Steve

Their art is better than mine, though.

To other users, here is the picture, taken from the homepage:

This is different, though.  It is actually completely different art.... it's just very very similar.  But the source images, the wood, the bezels, the track numbers, the labels... they're all different.  (And better.  I am definately not an artist!)

My guess is that he used my image as a placeholder during development, then replaced it with his own when he was done.  Is that wrong?  If it is, I'm equally guilty; my jukebox ships with a skin that duplicates the look of Arcade Jukebox 8.  It was intended for those who wanted to use AJ8 but were running on DOS and couldn't.  (And ironically, it's THAT image that Silverjuke borrowed and that I eventually gave them permission for.)

So I'm more amused by the similarity than anything.  :)

Yes, it just similar, and not directly a clone. I have thinked the same, as he may have used your application as a inspiration.

I did the same thing, when I created Arcade Music Box. The standard purple skin was very much a inspiration of a MAMEWAH skin, a user was posted on this forum  (I even used the jukebox photo image).

Direct Borrow is not god, but I can

I am the author of DAM JukeBox.

Guys, it sounds like you have judged my program by 1 single screen shot. Alright I confess to doing exactly what Chris described - using his image as a placeholder and then replacing it with my own art work, but my program is completely different. (Have you actually downloaded it and tested it??) ;D

I WAS inspired by Chris' DOSCab/WinCab Jukebox, although it was 3 years ago in August 2003. That is when I actually coded 90% of DAM JukeBox. Steve who made the post and myself tried DOSCab/WinCab Jukebox and thought of a few more features that WE would like to have in a MAME style JukeBox... So I decided to give it a go at coding. (My first project actually) and I used the image as a place to start and the whole concept really - I didn't consider myself stealing it as we were going to be the only 2 people using it - since then heaps of people have told me to make it public, so I updated a few screens, tidied up a bit of code and released it as version 2. (along with the website www.damjukebox.vze.com (http://www.damjukebox.vze.com))

Chris, if you are affended in anyway - just tell me and I will change the default skin...There is actually another skin that ships with DAM JukeBox (50's theme), if I had of used that skin as the default, would I still be accused of stealing (borrowing)??

I take my hat off to Chris, as I see his dedication to the scene, I am just a nobody who had fun making a JukeBox (Software and cabinet) and felt compelled to share it with anyone willing to try it out.

Sorry for the long post, but I felt I had to stand up for myself...

Cheers guys,
DAM Soft

Great to hear.

Screenshots is Mosley used to evaluate. I'm may have been negative, but after Chris came in, it very OK. If I sound negative, sorry or course.

You application should even being added into the wiki! If you doesn't do that, I would test it out, and I add the entry into that (so I can see, which formats, resolution, rotations and so on it support).

So I can not see the problem about the "clone/inspiration", as Chris even said. It even look very very good trough  :D. So even people would say it a Clone or not, I'm do sen

I apologize if I sounded ike I judged it... the only judgement I thought I made was about the quality of the art, specifically that yours is better than mine... :)

This is exactly how DOSCab (and later WinCab) got unleashed... post a screenshot of a decent program and people will want it!

Again, not meaning to sound accusatory at all.  If you were selling it commercially, that would be a different story... that was why I initially was unhappy with Silverjuke for borrowing my art, since it was commercial.

Are there any 'animated' jukeboxes out there ? When I say that I mean the artwork (flipping pages and so on)

I'd love to see a old record flip on to play  ;D

Anyone know of any ?

No records flipping, but VMJ uses 3D animated sliding trays to display albums artwork.

I'd be keen to hear from you guys on what you think of it.

Steve, great job on the jukebox, and particularly the artwork.  Two issues prevent me from using it after taking a look at it.

1)  No random setting for the track listings.  For a retro-style jukebox, especially if you have a large collection of songs, displaying them randomly recreates the user experience of looking through all the labels to find something 'interesting' to listen to.

Of course, if I wanted to, I could make a subset of my albums pretty easily.  But not a subset of songs off of the albums.

2)  800 x 600 doesn't work right...the labels don't line up.  That's the usual setting of my all-purpose PC.  I see it looks very nice at the higher 1024 x 768 setting.

But it sure is pretty and works great.

Thanks for the comments Chris & Space Fractal.

Brian, actually I wrote DAM JukeBox... Steve made the original post. ;D

1) This is an interesting approach which I haven't seen before. I understand what you are saying, but in practice wouldn't it be VERY difficult to find the song you are looking for to play. It does play random songs by itself though if you don't select any songs to play...

2) The minimum requirements as posted on the website are 1024 x 768
I myself run that on my dedicated MAME/DAM JukeBox machine, so pretty much designed it for that resolution - it was just too hard to cater for every resolution possible and still make it look good.

Thanks Brian for taking the time to try it out and give your feedback. :)

Steve, I will add my cabinet pics to my website soon.

Thanks for the answers.  I appreciate them.  Yes, it would be totally impossible to find a specific song if the songs were shown randomly on the interface.  But that is the way I tend to use WinCAB, Chris' jukebox.  If nothing on the first screen appeals to me, I check the second screen, etc....until I find something I'd like to hear.  But, then again, I'm 50 years old and grew up listening to 'singles' jukeboxes at teen centers, bowling alleys and eventually taverns.

When I want to select an album to listen to, or to jump to a particular song, then I load up an album-style jukebox such as SKJukebox or FreeBox.   Like my daughter says "It's all good".

You have a sharp looking, easy to use, stable jukebox that really would work well if properly loaded up with a nice mix of singles.  That's amazing.  Great work!

Space Fractal - the screenshot above is actually the 50's skin that ships with DAM JukeBox - Steve prefers that one.

Thank you very much for the inclusion in the wiki, I will make a few changes once I have a spare moment. :)

Brian, at the risk of sounding like copying Chris' WinCab, I could put that feature in as an option - perhaps under party mode? I mostly just listen to the random autoplay and queue a few a songs of my own.

Cheers.

I also grew up listening to a singles jukebox and DAM has this feature. I don't understand why you'd want it random  :-\ If you had say 50 pages of songs how on earth would you find a song you really wanted to listen to ?

Unless I read this wrong, and you are talking about having the newest songs first. Meaning that when you add new music to a playlist they are the songs at the front (I remember the old wall mount jukeboxes doing this) This is something I'd like too  :applaud:

But at the end of the day, I just start DAM up and let it play random songs from the playlist, and cueue up songs I really want to listen to.

Just my 2 cents  :)

Steve, my mp3 collection consists mostly of about 350 albums (LP's) that I've bought over my lifetime.  In all, over 4000 tracks.  I spent over 2 years converting my vinyl and cassettes into mp3's.  Since I shelled out the $$ for the music, even if it was 50 cents at a used record store clearance bin, it's a safe bet that every screen would have something on it that personally would like to queue up for a listen.

The DAM Jukebox's configurator program is fast and versitile, in terms of building playlists from a large collection.  I do think it would be nice to have the option to either scramble the playlist before it is saved or when starting the jukebox.   But to be clear.....it's fine as it is.

Brian I am with you on that, I have so much music it's not funny, but I've taken the time to create different playlists (say 80's Grunge and so on) Might take a while but to me it's worth it.

And as for random, I know you can do this in iTunes  8)

I've had a thought  :applaud:

I've just bought a 24" Dell Widescreen monitor. Could Portrait mode be included in the next build ??

Also, do you plan on putting a Photoshop template up for download so we can make our own Jukebox templates ?? I'd like to create a new theme (and happy to upload it)

Let us know.
