Title: What to use the next cabinet for.....it's just waiting.
Post by: AE35 on July 18, 2006, 04:36:13 am
Hi all.

Hmmm....I just got my third cabinet. I had decided to use for either
1) an upright driving cabinet(maybe crusin')  2) a gun cabinet(act-labs, duck hunt,
hogans alley, bang etc)

Since my wife wants to have a sit-down driving cab when the time comes, we
decided on the gun cab.

But now that I'm bored at work, I've been thinking. Maybe I could make a
one-player, vertical monitor with the joystick in the middle for such games as
Galaga and Commando, and skip the gun cab this time.

So what do you think? The wife will 100% say a gun cab, but I'm not sure
what I want to do:) (if I get the choice)

I mean, Bang etc are great fun, but joystick games are the backbone of arcade:)

What are your other 2? When you say you just "got" your 3rd cabinet, what do you mean?

Oh...I buy the empty original cabinets(made for no particular games)

The first one is a two-player four-way, the second is a two-player eight-way.

my wife wants to have a sit-down driving cab.

Where does one find these women. I was begining to think they were a myth.

Convincing my wife we need a pinball was like fighting back the tide. Now that I have the OK for one, I will likely get two. ;)

If you dont already have a vertical classics cab. I suggest that. Its really nice playing vertical games how they are supposed to and I believe there are over 1500 vertical games in mame.

i agree.  If your other 2 are horizontal machines, a vertical setup will give you a lot more playable games, and IMHO, a lot more enjoyment.

i love gun games, but I would keep that in mind for my next cab... I'd definitely want a vertical cab before a gun cab.

So, even though I already have the vertical games that I want on the other
horizontal machine(Galaga, Commando etc), you still recommend it?

Yes.  If you have a 25" monitor, the vertical "screen" is roughly the same as a 19" screen, but there's just something that feels "right" about playing on a true vertical screen.

If you were only making one cab, I'd say go horizontal, but if you have the option, I'd always prefer a true horizontal and a true vertical cab.

I DO have a 25" monitor, but I see your point perfectly.

However, that would amount to four machines all-in-all:

1 x 8-way horizontal
1 x 4-way horizontal
1 x 8-way vertical
1 x 4-way vertical

AE35, what about using 4-way/8way switchable joysticks like the MagStik Plus from Ultimarc?  I like mine a lot.

Or if you have money to burn, the new super-psycho UltraStik 360's.

I just removed my mag-sticks, since I don't like them:)

And, I like fixed things...

But, I take it it could be a vertical 8-way(still good for galaga)

..or maybe just the lightgun.....

I had a feeling that was coming.   ;D

Out of curiosity, what didn't you like about them?

I don't see a whole lot of need for an 8way vertical cab.  A 4way vertical cab is plenty in my mind.... but then again, I'd see the 4way vertical as a classics only cab.

Are there really that many vertical games that use an 8way?  Maybe if you're a big shmup fan (and who isnt? ;) )

/me shrugs

I guess you'll just HAVE TO build 4 cabs.  That's all there is to it ;)

BUT WHAT ABOUT TIGER HELI??? :notworthy:

So, I'm not the only one who don't like the mag-sticks?

Well, I like short throw, but they were too much. But not the main problem.
It was hard to hit the up down left right, it mostly want to go diagonally!

For example, in Out Zone, or Twin Cobra etc. it's hard going right UP, the player
will zig-zag. Annoyed me like hell.

Only go with a lightgun cabinet if you can mount the monitor at a perpindicular 90 degrees with the ground. angled monitors and lightguns are not a perfect match.
