Hi,
I was wondering if anyone knew where to find a 24x8 serial lcd (a whole package, not just the screen) for displaying button assignments in a MAME cab. Ebay has been disappointing lately... Thanks!

PS the cheaper the better, used is fine too!

They don't have the exact size that your looking for but www.seetron.com has a nice set of displays. They have a 4x40 that is very nice, you have to buy the display plus the serial backpack. They even have wiring harnesses and installation kits available as well. I use the 4x40 in my cab with mamewah and have liked it alot. I did just order a parallel display from another site as I have been bouncing around the idea of switching to Mala. If I do I will probably put my display which is complete up for sale.
Pictures of it in action are on my website.

Sweet Circo, I have that exact same LCD display, and I plan on using it exactly as you have there.
Just wondering what app you use to interface with the LCD to display the button configs? I must admit I haven't really looked much into it yet, since my cab is far from complete....

I got my 24x8 LCDs on eBay. There's a guy who usually puts them up for about $25 with the board and everything.

That is where I got my 4x40 display. I think I paid $35 for the display and serial backpack on ebay. Then I bought the wiring harness and install kit directly from seetron.
Unfortunately Mamewah uses .lcd files for the output to the lcd and those you have to make from scratch. For mame I referenced the controls.ini file and made individual .lcd files for each game. For the consoles it was easier as I made a generic controls layout based on the individual system and all I had to do was change the game name in each file. I used textpad to edit the files because it supported the ascii codes that control the lcd display.

Yeah there's nothing like that up on ebay currently. Hopefully soon one will pop up.

Could you just rip off the serial backpack of your current LCD to use with MaLa?

I don't think so, even without the backpack it's still considered a serial lcd on the website.
