Well, I finally have physical progress. I've had the TV (27" Insignia, using component video) and computer set up in the corner of my living room for almost 4 months, but now I actually have some construction progress. As such, I think it's time to post. :)
Anyway, the style is based loosely off the Killer Instinct cab design. It's not much as of yet, but I felt quite good just getting this far. It's a basic 3/4" MDF cab, and will be reinforced by 2x3's. I think I went a bit overboard on attaching the braces to the base, but oh well.
The CP extends about 1.5" past the back of the 4-way in the back, but for some reason Visio isn't saving that to the JPG. Joysticks are going to be either P360's or the new super-duper ultra-fangled Ultimarc sticks, pending some reviews.
Hopefully this thread will keep me motivated to finish it asap. :)

Planning on it. :)
Unfortunately, work was delayed because of ridiculously hot temperatures this weekend. Here's hoping for at least a little bit of a cooldown before next.

How about going with an Escher theme. Black, white, and/or brown. You've got lots of cool imagery to work with. That shot of Escher holding a mirrored ball could be the centerpiece art around your trackball. Just an idea.
Want to keep motivated to get it done? Plan a barbecue for the first week in September.
Good luck with your project.

I've thought a lot about that, actually, but I'm not sure I could pull it off. I had thought about using the Hand With Reflecting sphere (or Three Spheres I (http://britton.disted.camosun.bc.ca/escher/three_spheres_I.jpg) or II (http://britton.disted.camosun.bc.ca/escher/three_spheres_II.jpg) for the trackball, too. However, my biggest issue is that it's an awful lot of black and white. I'm not sure if it'll look right.

Better motivation: Getting married on 9/16. :) The only problem with that motivation is that it also sucks up quite a bit of my free time.

yeah, i seem to like that escher theme to a cabinet. my first mame cabinet run thru was pretty boring, just basic control panel. i do like the idea of maybe having an escher picture to run across your control panel. i think it could depend on how busy you want it.
speaking of hot weather...man, it's been a hot few days out here in cali. not to mention i had to tarp down my wood cause it started to rain yesterday. ???

My sig was originally going to be the marquee, actually, only with "escher/arcade" (er/ar blended together) instead of "escher". But I have zero art skills, and couldn't make it look like anything but crap.

Trust me, it's a lot easier trying to make something out of "Dilbert" than the works of M. C. Escher! I think the main problem is that his work refuses to stay flat, it wants to be dynamic. To have it lying flat on a 3-dimensional object is going to cause visual confusion.

You may be right about it being almost dizzing to look down at this as a cp overlay, but I wanted to mention it anyway.
One of my favorite escher peices:
"Prentententoonstelling"

With the trackball right in the middle there? Kinda neat.

I kinda like that. I might just have to consider the options again, depending on what Gamecreature comes up with.

I'm getting nauseous just looking at it! :o

Easy for you to say - you're not the one who's going to have to try and adapt it and make sense of it. :laugh2:
Hey, escher. How do you feel about art deco?

I like it, for the most part, though sometimes it can get gaudy.
