Title: Happs Joysticks and Buttons
Post by: Searcher7 on July 10, 2006, 10:08:49 pm: There is a lot of information on joysticks and buttons here, but unfortunately I haven't been able to find it together so I can do an accurate comparision.

I'm interested in the facts. And in particular, I'm looking at the Happs Joysticks and buttons. The A) ULTIMATE, B) SUPER, C) COMPETITION, and D) UNIVERSAL.

I need to be able to categorize them in a way Happs will not do.

Please look at the below and let me know if this is possible.

1) Joystick sping-back tension: heavy, medium, or light?
2) Joystick detent: 8-way assumed - Heavy, light, or none?

And as for buttons. I'm curious as to what the majority of players prefer.
1) Buttons: concave or convex?
2) Buttons: click or none?
3) Buttons: spring - strong or light?

1) Most people use concave buttons.
2) I prefer leaf switches to the clicky micro switches. Also, in my opinion leaf switches are a little smoother then micro switches.
3) For spring tension, I wouldn't worry about this to much because you'll be jamming on those buttons while playing and probably won't notice the tension of the spring. You may have a hard time finding specific information on spring tensions for different buttons.

Post by: divemaster127 on July 11, 2006, 11:27:28 am: I sell several thousand buttons a years, approx. 98% are concave, 1.9% are comps buttons & maybe .01% are ultimate buttons...joysticks like the above post go to retroblast, its mostly opinion...for the money & feel I like competition joysticks but lots of people like others.

For reference, searcher7 is ... What was it that saint called him ? Oh yeah ... "one of the old fogies".

My personal classification on the joysticks you ask about (that I have used) fallsin line with the reviews at Retroblast.

As far as my button preferences go:

1) Concave
2) No click, leaf preferred (as opposed to optical buttons, which I'm not fond of)
3) Lighter is better -- I will sometimes pull the spring from leafswitch buttons to lighten the feel.

I'll word it this way.

Between the Ultimate, Super, Competition, and Universal joysticks, how would each rate in order for detent feel when the joysticks are rotated 360 degrees?

Between the Ultimate, Super, Competition, and Universal joysticks, how would each rate in order for strength of spring-back tension?

P.S: From what I can tell, it seems that the biggest reason the Ultimate joystick is not popular is because of it's relatively longer range of motion between switch activations.
