I have a good buddy that has a phobia just as strange. Pork and Beans. Weird, huh. I guess when he was really young he had a super-intense dream that he was drowning in a bath tub full of pork and beans. We do the same kind of thing that Maury was doing. He doesn't cry, though...

HA! That's one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time!! How can someone be terrified of pickles!? :laugh2:
-
Funny? Yes. But I could only watch so much before it became absolute exploitation. It wouldn't have been so disgusting (in the end), if the show actually demonstrated any desire to understand the origin and nature of these phobias, instead of just thrusting these people into the limelight to be mocked like a freakshow.
As silly as they seem, to those of us without phobias, they are, in some cases, completely debilitating to the people suffering from them.
The object or catalyst for the phobia itself is really inconsequential, since it's usually a mundane object that imprints itself on the phobic. What's most important is understanding that these people need therapy to overcome these fears, a sort of reverse engineering of the phobic reaction. It's sad to see this treated as a sideshow, and it does nothing to help dispell the negative stereotypes associated with psychological disorders. Phobias are treatable with Cognitive-behavioral therapy; they take time, but they can almost always be minimized in some way.
(Note: I have psychologists in the family, I am not an expert myself.)

Let there be a call to arms. Be at alarm and be forewarned, for there is an evil of an unbeknownst proportion before us. Let us not be deceived on the grounds of it
-
Heh-heh...pickles.
-
I don't want a pickle.....
.... I just wanna ride my motor-cycle.
/obscure?
And I was one of the lucky few to watch that show when it actually aired... I must say, it was disheartening to see them paraded like a freakshow, but it was also like watching a train wreck.. I couldn't change the station...

God, I hate that song. My friend can repeat it word for word, much to my dismay (and his delight *at* my dismay.)

I don't watch it, but it happened to be on a few times when I got up in the morning... There ARE some "guests" which are so obviously [bad] actors.

I think we can all agree that the movie based on his song Alice's Restaurant was one of the greatest movies of all time ;D
alright, I admit, I only made it about 10 minutes into the movie before turning it off.

eh, what can these people expect going on Maury, or Jerry Springer, or Dr. Phil, etc... Anyone that has serious problems/phobias shouldn't be looking to television shows for help. If you put yourself out there on one of these goofy shows, you get what you deserve.

It was hilarious for a while but then he just kept presenting her with pickles. Seeing all he did I was expecting him to take her back to the stage and there would be hundreds of pickles surrounding her. Then he'd just make them cover her while laughing maniacly. Thanx.
