My wife gave me one of these for Christmas.
I've played it a couple of times.
It's OK.
The games are not the original Atari code however - they have been modified slightly - probably to accomidate the new hardware.
I have verified this against my A2600 & cart collection.
Bottom line: it doesn't beat a real 2600 but for about $ 25 who cares.

Never did try try to hack it but it did give me an idea to convert one of my extra 2600 controllers into a PC gamepad.
I'm still in the planning phase on that one.
I'll either have to find an very small gamepad pcb to fit inside the base under the original contact board, or wire the controller to an external box that will house the gamepad pcb.
 :)

I believe there are already plans on the 'net to connect an UNMODIFIED atari 2600 joystick to the PC parallel port and drivers to use it.

I came across this the last time I was at Target and bought one.  I haven't had a chance to play it for more than a couple of minutes, but it seems pretty fun (in a retro kind of way)  ;)

Hmmm...
I'll have to search for those IZ.
Thanks for the heads up.

look here:

dpadpro will do it for win9x
NTpad XP will work on win2k XP

Unfortunately, I can't seem to get the page to come up but thanks for trying.
I did find this in a search however:

http://random64.emuhq.com/doc1/Joy2600-PC_eng.shtml

It's a little closer to what I originally planned.
The site also alluded to input delays when using a parallel interface.
Still it would be nice to fit everything into the base of the stick not to have to use any external components.
On the plus side since I have everything but the 9 pin connectors & the cable, it won't cost much.
 ;)

Here's another link to the same site. Have no idea why the other link doesn't work, it worked when I posted the previous message.

http://www.geocities.com/aldo.vargas/tools/dpad.html

As for delay, I've built parallel port adapters based on the circuits above for sega genesis, snes and psx and never experienced any lag...

Wow,
Is it as easy as that?
From the looks of the diagram, all you need is one 10k ohm resistor & a couple of DB connectors to make a standard Atari 2600 stick (with one button) to work.
This seems to simple.
I just scavenged through some of my old PC/electronics junk boxes & found that I've already got the connectors.
A quick trip to Radioshack for the resistor & I'm in business.
Thanks a bunch!
 ;D

BTW- Have had any bad experinces with any of the adapters Iz?

Some of them depend on the parallel port being in a specific mode (spp/ecp/epp) so read the directions carefully and make sure the port is set to the required mode in the bios. other than that, no problems whatsoever!

The psx one rocks, just a few diodes and the connector. I hacked a psx extension cable so I can connect unmodifed psx controllers. Got a soft dance pad hooked up for the kiddies right now (I have 4 daughters). It's a huge hit!

Can't wait to try.
I'll keep you posted.
Thanks again.

Finally had time to put the parallel port adapter together.
My old Atari 2600 controller now works great with Stella.
Unfortunately it does not work with Z26 - can't have everything.
Thanks for the tips IZ!

Get a program that maps joystick directionals and button presses to keystrokes and map it to the keystrokes z26 expects. Can't remember the name of the appropriate program, joykey maybe?
