Title: Trackball settings?
Post by: tore- on June 15, 2006, 08:05:17 am
Hello!

I've just aquired two trackballs wich I plan to attach to my current cab, just recieved the balls and hooked them up to my laptop for a test run.

They worked great, but I'm having great problem with configuring mame so that e.g. marble madness runs as it should.

The only tip I found on the forum here was to change windows mice settings: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=48113.0;attach=28047;image

What does users here have done to get that proper trackball feeling?

Thanks a bunch!

Mice encoders count at 4x compared to the original 1x of arcade games.  Generally it is best to set the analog setting to 25%.

Have you tested marble madness with 25% ? You have to spin like a crazy person to get some speed on the ball.

Also, just noticed that centiped doesnt use my mouse, wierd, since my normal mouse works, but not the trackball.

Further advise on this topic is wanted  :notworthy:

For MM, I had to to raise --- I forgot the exact setting... speed? --- all the way up.   Play around with it, and I think this may have been brought up before, try a search (sorry for lack of link - I'm in a bit of a hurry).

For both games, I had to set input to Mouse_2 or something.  Just remap your controls with the trackball.

I know I'm a little vague, but I moved my test setup and don't have access to it just yet.

It ready depends on what trackballs you got.  Real arcade ones?

If so, be aware that PC mice have a much higher "resolution" than arcade TBs.  Mame's default analog speed is set to normal PC mice, which means you need to increase mame's analog sensitivity (in game, tab, analog controls) to probably at least 100%, and possibly to the max (255%).

Setting windows pointer speed shouldn't effect mame, but sometimes does.  You can try increasing that also and see if it effects you.  Whatever you do, I do NOT suggest checking enchance pointer precision; reworded: I recomend unchecking enhance pinter precision.

If that's not enough, I suggest replacing the original encoder wheels (the thing with teeth that passing through the sensors) with higher tooth count wheels.  That has been do by printing on tranparences, or buying from RandyT at GGG or others.

(I am assuming the TBs are feeling too slow.)

Im using optipac and trackballs from Ultimarc, seems fairly steady built but sometimes when I spin it REAL fast it makes some funny sounds.

Ill report back when I've actually built the new CP. Kinda hard to test when the TB is located on my desktop.
