Well, due to many reasons (lack of skill, lack of money, etc), I have decided to NOT convert my Twin Eagle cab to a Q*bert cab.
I realized that saving the money for saws, sanders, paint, etc was keeping me from playing the games!!
So, I have decided to keep costs way down, use what I got (minus a joystick I just bought) and create Junk MAME.
A simple cab that looks like crap but plays well....lol
Comments?
I will post pics soon.

You'll play games on it - love it, and then you'll want it to look better.
Bring on the pics!

Please dont do that. :hissy: You need something more stable that that and the whole desk thing doesnt cut it. If you wanted you could make it out of cheap plywood and some 2by4s and dont paint it. The whole junk mame kills me. It doesnt have to look good but as long as its a nice strong upright its passable.

I love your idea up to a point. I grew up playing these machines, and NONE of them were nice. Scratches, cigarette burns, and joysticks on their last legs were all the norm. I prefer a converted cab with dedicated art to a homebuilt with a cartooney control panel overlay and art from 30 different machines, but I'm sure that I'm way in the minority.
The thing is, once you get it inside and it starts stinking up the place it's a hassle to get it back out and make it right.
I suggest sanding and painting it (cheap, just hit it with 220 grit and roll it with satin black enamel and a foam roller, supplies will be around $25) and putting in new sticks buttons. The controls are key to the experience, and they're also not that expensive.
Just so you know I'm coming from the EXACT same place as you, here's my beater Twin Eagle in a Zaxxon cab.
Its gone to a new home, but this machine had a lot of charisma.

Thanks guys!
Here are some pics of it un-modified:

I will take some more pics tonight. I have it stripped down and am working on the CP.
I have a new joystick ordered so I will have some new equipment. I might go ahead and try to sand/paint. Maybe I will get into it.
I just don't want to waste 6 months on a cabinet that still looks like crap (due to my lack of skills) and doesn't play games.
On a side note, if I decide to sand/paint the sides, how can I give it a smooth feeling and not feel like paint?

I would definitely sand it down and give it a coat of black paint as suggested.
Replacing the t-molding will make a huge difference as well, and it's cheap. Go for a funky color like alien green and it'll really pop. You only need 16' of it to do that cabinet.
I have 2 of them sitting in garage right now and they are far from junk.
I think they are great little compact cabinets, and the casters on the back are a big plus.

hey, that is cool!
I do want to paint it some other color than black though. Maybe I should go for the Q*bert yellow???

I thought everybody loved those little Taito cabs !
Cheers.

Heck, they're a lot easier to move than a midway 25"

hmmm... my last post didn't make it so I am sorry if this turns out to be a double.
Anyway, I do love that cab.
Especially since I only paid $35 for it! hahaha

One day I hope to finish my Taito MAME cab also. I like the cabinet size, but kind of pigeon holes you in what you can do. I was originally going frankenpanel direction, but I have officially decided to go 1player vertical classics just to get it done. I just have to mod the original chassis to accept my 21" computer monitor(it was soooo close to fitting... :'() Anyone up for some welding?? ;D

got any pics of it?
