Hello,
about to start my first mame cab, in the final stages of designing CP for colour/art.
may i ask for your guys input on the following basic layout
(http://waldo.orcon.net.nz/cp%20base%20layout.jpg)
1 x Omni Arcarde 4/8
1x Omni Basic
2x Spinners (the grey circles
1x 3" trackball
buttons
theres also a usb port going in on each side by the pinball buttons for adding in player 3 & 4 should i want to.
i guess i want to know, where the spinners are located on the picture, is this ok, or would it berecommended to move them ?

Will you be using the standard one and two player buttons when you are using the spinners? If so, make sure that is comfortable. It doesn't look too bad to me, just making sure you have thought about it. I assume the 3 buttons in the middle are mouse buttons for the trackball?
-
yeah those are the mouse buttons, was planning on just using the player 1 & 2 buttons. once i finish the cardboard mock i guess ill find out if its comfortable or not.

Image link is broken for me...

Personally, I would change the buttons around.
Depending on which games you love to play (looks to me you're into fighters :) ), consider combining the NEo-Geo layout with additional buttons over the Neo-Geo layout. Maybe add another button which you can use with more traditional fighters e.g. SF2 etc. A bit like this (ignore the spacing obviously;
:) :) :) :)
:) :)
:)
:)
And personally I would bring the Trackball buttons closer to the trackball itself.
Good luck!

If you play any Golden Tee, I might recommend moving the trackball buttons somewhere else, perhaps behind the trackball. You might find that you're hitting those buttons when you spin the ball forward hard.

I agree with toasty. My CP is almost the same as yours, with ESC, Tab and pause buttons where your mouse buttons are. When we play Golden tee, we hit the buttons frequently and exit the game by accident. Even though yours are mouse (an accidental press probably won't matter), it can be uncomfortable when you hit them.

Like toasty, I agree that you shouldn't have anything in the path of those golden tee people who take a full backswing and follow through like they are throwing a discus. Could end up with stubbed fingers and/or broken buttons.
And if a gal ends up breaking a nail on those buttons using the trackball, hoo buddy I feel sorry for you... they get mad over that stuff.

I've actually got a buddy like this that had to have SURGERY because of a Golden Tee-related injury (on a commercial GT cab, not a MAME cab). Slammed his hand forward and right into the glass covering the monitor. Didn't break the glass, but ended up with some bone fragments floating about...
He's doing fine now, and with that in mind, this ranks up there with the all-time funniest injuries. His wife thought it was hysterical. Pathetic, but hysterical.

I also say move those buttons. For one thing you'll be either taking your hand off the trackball to press the buttons, or crossing over to reach with your other hand. Use Player 1 buttons instead, if at all possible.
Slightly off-topic, but my wors Golden Tee injury was also with a commercial cab. I may have been a little intoxicated at the time, but I did my backswing as normal and when it came to follow through I went a little low and hit the front of the cab. Hurt like a son of a gun, and completely ruined my score for the rest of the game. A little blood, but nothing was broken. Good times. ;D

There are 5 unnecessary buttons IMO. Strip away the three between the spinners and the other two beasides the 1/2 player select. Why do you need so many buttons ? I mean emulators can be configured and buttons reused and/or comboed, you will never need all that buttons toghether.
Clean it up and try to make buttons usage confortable for trackball and spinner games (they seem to be already confortable in the actual position).

Funny stuff. I do the two thumb method now, I have stubbed my fingers far too many times to continue with the wild swing method.

hmm , i wasnt planning on playing that much golden tee, but with all the stories of injury and drunken fun im gonna have to rethink that descision :)
Cheers for the advice.
