Almost everyone calls me Pi, much before than coming to internet. A nick is a nick, regardless of its origins. But the part that I like the most, is that sometimes you get to choose your nick, as I did, instead of having a name (I hate mine) or nick imposed from outside.

What's REALLY great is when you start getting mail to your house in your new name, you get this look of total disbelief on your face then you begin to realize the wonderful complications.
For example, that wonderful area on your applications (for everything) that says "alias" or "other names used" or even better.... the police department. It's all good if you have a normal sounding name, or even a funny one, but imagine having an alias like "Pookie" and reading that write up in the criminal registar in the paper "Joe "Pookie" Smith pled guilty to obstruction of justice, harboring a felon, three counts of weapons possesion and possesion with the intent to distribute cocaine. "Pookie" Smith faces a maximum term of 15 years in a federal prison."
A friend of mine thought he was being funny and had signed all his checks "Jesus H. Christ" for a year and a half, he bounced a $150 check and the store was not amused, they pressed charges and now his new alias according to the P.D. is Jesus H. Christ.
It's great when I get the religious types asking if I've found Jesus, now I can tell them yeah, I got his number, want me to call him up? They usually look at me like I'm an as :censored: le, but if they only knew how serious I was about it....

/me Sulks off to his house and slams the door and contemplates all the non reality that the internet has to offer. After a few minutes he forgets what he was angry about. He then gets on the internet and tries desperatly to find out where in the universe planet galaga is.

I was pretty much universally known as shmokes in high school. It is now nothing more than an email address and an avatar. People in the real world don't call me that except on the increasingly rare occasion that I run into someone I haven't seen since high school.

Although most people call me by 4 letter names...none of them have the word Tech in them... :'(

jeremiah is a bit of a long name so friends have usually called me either 'j' or 'bullfrog'... a story about nicks:
there was a kid I knew in college named Colin that everybody called "The Monster". He was a pretty mellow guy, but he knew how to party...
A couple years ago, a few years after college, I was at a wedding with my wife. We were leaving the church, going through the receiving line, when I saw that Colin was one of the groomsmen (I had no idea before this). As soon as we saw each other we recognized one another.
He immediately yelled out "Hey J!"
I immediately yelled out "Monster!"
I got a few weird looks from that comment...
we did have a few good laughs later that night >:D
