Title: Help with wire colors for center Spy Hunter button (plus extra wire is weird)
Post by: unclet on March 05, 2003, 09:00:44 am
I opened my Spy Hunter steering wheel assembly yesterday night to trace which colored wires were used for which triggers and buttons so I would ultimately know how to wire this assembly up for Mame use.

I noted which colored wires were used for the "common" and "NO" connections for the triggers and thumb buttons and noted which colored wires were used for the potentiometer.    I now had 4 "unknown" colored wires left to map.  (NOTE: This was confusing since I only had the center button left, which I thought would only require 2 wires).

Anyway, I could not for the life of me figure out how to  access the center button area to make this determination, so I am asking you people for help  :>)

- What are the standard colored wires used for a Spy Hunter steering wheel assembly for the center button

- What could the two left over wires be for?

It's prob for the voltage and ground for the light - aren't you talking about the VAN button in the middle?  That flashed when the van was near, so the extra wires are prob for the bulb/LED.

Download the manual from http://www.spies.com/arcade/manuals/SpyHunter.pdf
It will give you all your answers (I think) :)

Thanks for the manual.   I will read it later.  I was not aware that the center button lit up (Ie: could not remember such detail as a teenager), but that explains the extra two wires.

There look to be two security screws holding this center button in place but I can not remove them from the assembly since they are completely rounded out.  Basically, all other screws are torx security screws (star shaped with a raised point in the middle of the star), but this button only has the pointed raised in the middle, not the 6 points star part.  Maybe these two screws were stripped or something, but I have no way of getting them off?    I hope the LED still works, since I can not get inside to change the bulb....

(carefully!) drill the screws out and replace them with new...

That's what he's gonna have to do...make sure you know someone with a tap and die set incase  you mess up the threads.

I do not think I need to drill them out if the LED and button works.   I need to test this, so this is why I wanted someone to tell me the what color are the wires which go to the button and which color wires go to the LED.

I looked through the document (recommend in this post) but there were no mention ofthe color of wires used.

If anyone knows which colors are used, then let me know.

Thanks

Wow the flashing van button was one of the coolest parts of the game if I remember correctly :)   Don't know if that is emulated in MAME, tho.  Can you post pics of the button up close so we get a better idea of what you are talking about?

Need to borrow a digital camera then I could.   Uh...actually I think you need to have some webspace to save the pic to then post the link to the pic .... right?  If so, then I can not since I do not have any webspace.

do this.. Take our your trusty ohmmeter (or someone elses) pick one wire, any wire and put on one lead of the meter.  Now check each remaining wire one at a time with the other lead and press the button while doing this..( you may need a third arm to do this..)  when you've found a pair of wires that show continuity (complete circuit, low ohms) with the button pressed then you've found the wires for the switch.  If in fact the lighted button used an led instead of a bulb them you may have some trouble figuring out which wires to connect to + or - .  Since an LED is a diode then it should look similar on the meter.. it should read low ohms one way and high the other way.  whichever way reads low ohms is the same way the LED should be connected to the power so make note of which wire was positive..  if it reads the same either way then its more than likely a light bulb and it doesnt matter..  hope this helps.. keep us posted ;D
