I have a massive MP3 collection and want to be able to listen to it on my basement stereo.I have a computer hooked up ton the stereo, in addition tobeing networked to the computer with the music. Are there any programs I can use which will make accessing these files easier? A whole OS perhaps?

I might have to wrong end of the stick here but you should be able to use any one of the numerous jukebox apps off here.

With Windows Media Connect (a poor man's version of Windows Media Center) you can use your wireless network to share audio files with a digital media receiver such as the Roku Soundbridge. Is that what you're looking for?
