Title: Safe thickness to leave after Routing?
Post by: lettuce on May 29, 2006, 06:24:13 am: What is the rule of thumb thickness you should leave if you are routing areas for joysticks to fit into? As i dont want to route too deep, and then have the CP splinter and crack when playing as there is not enough thickness in the MDF??

Post by: Fozzy The Bear on May 29, 2006, 07:15:04 am: If you're using 3/4" MDF then just route to the depth of yout joystick mounting plate and it should be fine.... If it seems too thin and weak then glue a plywood backing piece under the bottom surface of the panel or mount a metal strengthening plate under the bottom of the panel.

Leave half an inch. Fozzy's tip should give you that thickness. Thinner than that, and you're risking someone's kid hanging on it like it's a handhold on a rock climbing wall and pulling everything out, or at least damaging something that'll be quite hard to repair.

Post by: lettuce on May 29, 2006, 05:17:15 pm: Yeah i meant routing from under the CP. Ive left 1/4" and that seems to be sturdy with no visable movement of the MDF around the routing areas. Have no plans to have kids playing on it so all should be well.

Seems like routing just enough for the mounting plate would be the exact same and wouldn't matter if it were top or bottom. Is there some other mounting plate you're thinking of?
