Can I install backups/imports using HDLoader w/o a mod chip?
Can I use a mod chip or dont need one?

With a real copy of HDLoader (or a memory card exploit and PSX game) you can do it without a modchip. You will need to FTP the games to the hard drive through your PC, but a modchip is not needed.
You CAN use a modchip with HDLoader if you wanted to. They can work together just fine. It's not necessary however.

Yes, you can. I transfer the data by attaching the PS2-Harddrive to my PC via a USB adapter.
Transferring of games is much faster if you transfer that way using the program WinHIIP.

If you got HDLOADER u can install backup games directly, just by cogswaping the games.
Heres how to do it:
1) Load your HDLoader
2) Insert an Original PS2 Game with a big TOC (GTA Vice City, FFX, for example)
3) When the disc stops spinning, open your CD tray with the cog swap tool
4) Install your backup by choosing the install option from the menu.
5) Enjoy ;)

You have to have the CD tray cover of your PS2 off and you need to use a tool to push a small white cog open manually to open the tray of the disc drive.
It's been known to cause problems with the drive, and frankly, its a pain in the ass. It works, but I'd much rather just FTP to the drive. And beyond that, a mod chip is really the easiest way to go IMO.

I'd go with this method. In less than 2 minutes you can have your PS2's HD hooked up to your PC and from there it's as simple as opening a program and clicking a button.
Of course you don't need a usb/firewire enclosure/adapter but if you don't have one, like I don't, you'll have to put the HD in your computer which requires a restart. But in my opinion it's still easier than cogswapping and much faster than FTPing.

Yeah I had a flip-top on my older PS2 before I got a modded one. They work well.
