Title: Alternative to slot cutter for T-molding
Post by: beaver24 on May 23, 2006, 08:37:43 pm
After looking all over the place for the slot-cutter router bit to route for t-molding I found a cheap alternative. I was looking around my garage and noticed the little 5 3/8" circular saw that came with my cordless drill kit which I have never used b/c the battery dies too quick. I noticed the blade was really narrow, measured it and sure enough it was 1/16". Ran it across a scrap piece of MDF and T-molding fit perfectly. Made a jig for the saw set the depth and ran it across the edge of my cp it worked perfectly. Just figured I'd mention it in case some of you have that saw they have never found a good use for.

Thats some good advice! It's not the slot cutter thats expensive, it's the combination of bits and a router. So, if someone has these tools it could indeed save them some money for potentially a 1 use tool.

Any chance you can post some pics of the jig?

There are better bits out there, but  this one (http://www.tmolding.com/cart/customer/product.php?productid=38&cat=5&page=1) from tmolding.com works fine.

I know the bits work perfectly, but I assumed other people may have the same thing I did. I got that saw with my drill and never used it. It was kinda a throw in tool with the kit, its nice to be able to use tools you already have and aren't using. They throw those in with all the cordless kits, just a suggestion.
