Title: Looking for the lighting in the old style jukes. LED's would be an option......
Post by: mccoy178 on May 09, 2006, 11:24:53 pm
I am thinking about using those lights used in the bubbles of old jukeboxes.  I know it's not rocket science, but where can you buy those things?  You know, the lights that rotate and change colors behind frosted plastic.  They were typically on the sides of all cool looking jukeboxes.  I found a company on ebay that sells the outer shell, but now I need to find the lighting that goes behind it.

Those animated color cylinders were very popular on Wurlitzer & Seeburg jukes in the late 1940's and early 1950's. They had an F15T8 fluorescent light in them as the light source. You can buy the entire assemblies as reproduction parts from www.victoryglass.com

I found a company on ebay that sells the outer shell, but now I need to find the lighting that goes behind it.

You can make your own..... Much cheaper than buying them.  Find a Stage Lighting supplier on the internet and buy colour gels (thin coloured plastic, heat resistant, flexible, sheeting.) This stuff is quite cheap and comes in virtually any colour you can think of.

Then you need a cheap, low speed motor and gearbox to drive it. Lots of places on the internet have these.

Make a frame to hold the lighting gel, and that's all there is to it. You can make it up as a colour wheel or as a rotating tube.

The DIY method is more fun than buying the stuff and probably with better results.
