OK have followed the instructions below from the "Hiding XP / Booting to your Emulator / Optimizing boot" thread.
i) Go to your Mamewah folder and edit your mamewah.ini file
ii) Near the bottom of the list of options is app_to_run_on_exit enter explorer.exe next to it and save the file.
i) Start Menu->Run and enter regedit
ii) Navigate to the item HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\IniFileMapping\system.ini\boot
iii) If there is an item in there called Shell right-mouse click and select modify
iv) Change the first three letters from SYS to USR
v) Navigate to the item HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
vi) Right-mouse click "Winlogon" and select New->String Value
v) Name it Shell then right mouse click Shell and select modify and enter the full path to your Mamewah executeable eg. c:\emu\mamewah\mamewah.exe
Confident that I've followed these instructions to the letter but now I get the Windows Welcome screen followed by a black screen with the cursor & no MAMEWAH!
How bad is this? Give it to me straight!

In my system Mamewah is c:\emu\mamewah\mamewah.exe Therefore that's the path I put in the FAQ
Maybe Mamewah on your system is in a different folder ?

the black screen with cursor sounds like mamewah is running but that your mamewah configuration isn't working properly.
Try to exit MAMEWAH the way you normally would: hopefully windows will launch.
Otherwise Hit CTRL-ALT-DELETE, if mamewah is running kill it.
Then click on the left most tab in the task manager window (can't recall what it's called) and click on new task then type in explorer and hit enter. If you can't see your mouse in task manager you can tab around use the tab key alot and the arrow keys.

I had to turn off the "Welcome" screen in XP before it would boot into MAMEWah as the shell. That's actually a normal setting under the "Users" options, though I don't remember exactly what it was.
