Title: VJ3 performance issues
Post by: Ted_Striker on March 02, 2003, 12:51:53 am
I was wondering what pc's people are running VJ on.  I have a p3 650 with 256mb Ram.  However it is a HP Brio with 8mb onboard video.  When VJ is playing a song the animation of the albumns scrolling gets choppy.  Also, I'm running the mp3's off of my central server.  So do I need to up my video card or play the mp3's from the jukebox machine instead of across a network to get the VJ animation smooth.  I am not against upgrading to a new machine but I would like to try to use a machine I have "lying around".

So lets hear some system specs.  What is the lowest spec that it runs good at and what do you think contributes the most to good performance.  Those with 2ghz machines don't need to rub it in :)... I know it runs good on those :).

Thanks

Im also interested what over people are using, I am using an old 400mhz for my project, nothing loaded on it yet  :-\ just hope it works okay.

also what size album covers are people using im sticking with 300x300 but might make them smaller if if works faster!

Since nobody responded to me, I did my own testing.  Basically I tried a bunch of different video cards.  It seems that choppy animation is due to video cards and not a slow computer.  I disabled my onboard video on my p3 650 above and tested a 64mb pci geforce 2mx400 and VJ work flawlessly.  Animation was smooth even on the fastest settings.  I tried an 8mb ati pci card I had and the jerkyness returned.  So for video on the pci bus it seems that 16 or 32mb video is the minimum (I didn't have either of these cards to test).

I then tested VJ on my mame machine which has an 8mb ati Video Card and a duron 700.  This time the card is an agp card.  It ran smoothly again.  So it seems that the added bandwidth of the agp slot and sharing of the system memory allows a lower card to run.

So basically if you want to run a slower computer  with VJ use an AGP card or a 32mb pci slot.

Tomorrow if I have time I'm going to test on a 450 and 300 and play Limbo with VJ (how low can you go :)....

I will post the results.
