OK.
I know there's plenty of info in the text files that come with Mamewah, but sometimes it's just hard to understand what does what ? Sometimes I don't even know what powers Mamewah has, and therefor not understand how to configure it. I only recently "discovered" how to get moving previews (avi's).
Also, I'd like to customize the lay-out (or at least get a customized lay-out that I downloaded) working.
What is catver and how to use it ? How do I get the screen resolution tools do what I want ? etc.etc.
Yes, there's plenty of threads here, yes I read the txt files, but I'd kill for a walkthrough from end-to-end, something like Exages excellent Summary of hiding Win XP.
Maybe we can work together on something like this ? (Wiki ?)

I was in the middle of creating a video tutorial for Mamewah's setup and configuration, but I recieved orders for a new assignment and had to postpone it. I probably won't get around to it until August/September now.
-
I have to agree with Level42. It would be a good thing to have an end to end walkthrough.
M3talhead, what orders, where?

OK, do you think the current status of your tutorial is "wiki-able" ? That way we would have a starting point and eveyone can add ?

Not really. Its just a bunch of raw footage with no audio and no real organization. I wouldnt want to put something on Wiki thats not completed.

someone made a mamewah config utility. it's fantastic. It might take a little bit of figuring out, but cpviewer's page has setup files for just about every system (http://www.emuchrist.org/cpviewer/mamewahinifiles.htm). with the mamewah config utility (http://www.bluecamel.org/?p=10) you just import those setup file and import them. It's a LOT easier than editing text files.
hope that helps

Andersen AFB, Guam.
M3talhead:
You are going to the greatest area in the world for scuba diving. If you are not already certified, take a scuba course. When you get to Guam, as soon as you can afford it, hop a plane to Palau where there is some un-freaking-believable diving. Then, go to Truuk Lagoon where there are several sunken Japanese ships from WWII. This is one of the top 10 divesites in all the world. If you don't go diving there, you may regret it for the rest of your life.

I got certified in '97 but havent been diving since about 2000-2001. I'm about 90% sure my BC is shot as well as all my neoprene. If I did decide to get back into it, I'm sure I'd go through a refresher class and get all new gear.

Yeah, I found that, but all it does on both my "regular" PC and my Mame PC is generate a "Cannot initialise application error". Seeing the Icon it uses (a pile of ---Cleveland steamer---) I thouht it was a phoney ?
<EDIT> Oops, only now I read it needs .NET framework ! Downloading it now and will give it a 2nd try !

NO! It's not phoney....... But it will still generate errors if you don't use an Ipac in your cabinet. These files look great, but are designed to configure to the kit of the person who wrote them. For the rest of us they're a bit of a waste of time and you might as well still be writing your own config files.
At least that way you get to understand how they work.

if I had a mamewah walkthru I would probably be using that instead of gameex right now.
-
Seems like a Mamewah walkthru would be a good candidate for the wiki?
-
Yeah, check out the Mamewah pages on the Wiki and you know there needs to be there something. I do think the Mamewah Config utility is a good starting point, but I haven't got it to work without errors yet.
Fozzy, I don't think you need an IPAC for the Config Tool, it's just optional (just like with Mamewah itself). However I'm using a J-Pac, so I dont mind if it is supported.
-
I also use mamewah as my frontend but dont know how to get all the bells and whistles to work. read all kinds of forums but still stuck on a few things. like change my layouts and also when i generate list it just shows the parent roms and not all the clones. thanks

The Ipac sections of those config files and the paths, are what are generating the application loading errors.

It seemed no one was really interested in working on the wiki, or haven't been as of yet, so I took the liberty of getting it going. Still have a ways to go (and I am new at wiki editing) but I could use some help if anyone is interested.
Check what I've done so far, and let's get this thing up to speed:

liquid8, I've been begging for this kind of information, PLEASE DON'T STOP!

One big round of applause for liquid8 :applaud: :applaud: :applaud:
This what I was looking for ! Haven't read/followed it into detail, will do so tomorrow, but it looks terrific !
Will try to add/edit if needed and possible for me.
Thank you !

This article is coming great . This is all Wiki about it!
A author/user of a another frontend could doing a simular thing (just remember to insert the frontend name first like he did for mamewah).
I hope this one clear a lots/some of questions for mamewah, I typical seen here on arcadecontrols.
I have recently added frontpage link to all mamewah subpages (I do not know how to add template).

Not because I started it, but I think this thread is SO valuable now for all BYOAC-ers here (at least the (large) number of Mamewah users), this deseves to be a sticky !

I think the Wiki is a GREAT idea!! I printed it off the other night and I'm still referencing it.
Is there anyway to get notification when and what has been updated?
-
you can subscribe to the rss feeds under 'Recent Changes' for a particular page to find out. I am still making constant changes, just trying to make sure as much info is in there as possible for now, then i will go back over it for more specific steps.
I have also started looking at the new beta version (1.62b10) and it looks like there were quite a few changes, so may have to look at that soon too.
Thanks SpaceFractal for the assistance.. I can use anyone that is familiar with wikis to go behind me and clean some stuff up, the formatting is not the greatest right now.
feel free to suggest anything that should be in there in this thread. I am also going to peruse through some of the common questions here and on the ArcadeOS/Mamewah forum and try to make sure everything is answered.
I wouldn't mind doing the same thing for some other frontends as well, but my priority is Mamewah :)
-
yep, I fixed some more table issues (speciel the ini page).
I hope Minwah like it, and use it as a documentation (yes, I'm still use mamewah in about 2 years).
What about how to launch a extenal applications from the menu, like Arcade Music Box (my own jukebox, made for mamewah), Chris Wincab and others?

Hahaha, no really, take a look at the sheer number of Mamewah related questions here...the bulk of them can be (will be) answered by this great wiki !
-
Just looked at the Wiki - good stuff! Thanks Luquid8 ;)
I think a lot of people overlook it but there is some info here: http://mamewah.mameworld.net/help.htm (also included with Mamewah), which is where a lot of that info is from.
I have slowly been working on some docs, but I don't have much time atm...even my beta work has slowed to a halt :(
-
Most excellent work. I might finally be able to get this program to work correctly. Thank's to all who have contributed to this Wiki.
-
I'ved added a ton of questions to the FAQ (http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Mamewah_FAQ), as well as added info about the ctrlr files (key config) (http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Mamewah_Controls), and information about custom lists (http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Mamewah_List_Creation). Peruse it if you have Mamewah questions... still updating. I will be checking out the beta shortly, and posting some information on that.
Also, I checked out the Mamewah config program (http://www.bluecamel.org/?p=10), and it is VERY nicely done. The only thing that wasn't quite working correctly is the layouts setup (couldn't download or install). I may decide to add instructions on using it as well. If you are having trouble setting up Mamewah, I highly recommend checking it out. It's in the Useful Programs section of the Mamewah Wiki (http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Mamewah).
-
The new beta version has a different setup for the inis (where they reside, not the contents of them.) Much of that specific info will eventually need to be changed.
Very nice looking so far.
One suggestion. By default, mamewah's mame.ini file has the "rom_folder vs list_xml" option selected by default. If you're using advancemame (like I did originally) you won't be able to use this method until you download the additional required files. I know for certain that the listxml.exe file was NOT included in the advmame download. I'm not certain what else is needed for that list generation method to work. It gave me large headaches for many hours, till I gave up on advmame and downloaded regular cmdline mame. (THEN I had figured out what I just stated above about the missing files.) No big deal. Got cmdline mame to work just fine on my TV!
Are there other versions of mame that don't automatically include the necessary files to use the default listgen method?
I'd contribute myself, but I just don't know for certain what is required and what isn't.
-
as you can se on the talk pages, the main version should been the officiel version, not the beta, because the betas is hidden on the mamewah pages, so most people would download the officiel version anyway (includning myself)
By nown it should been a beta/wip page, that cover all changes like this (Mamewah_Beta). When it finally released, wiki pages can been updated to suit it needs.
