Title: Never owned one
Post by: whatzcrackn on May 06, 2006, 11:03:49 pm
Why do people love dreamcast so much? I never had one and I think I might have played one in college but nothing serious.

- Super cheap
- Can natively boot emulators/backups/homebrew (no modchip needed)
- Awesome arcade ports (almost all decent Naomi games have a DC release, and they're all close to arcade perfect)
- Fun accessories (light guns, maracas, fishing controllers, etc etc)
- An all around strong lineup of games, aracde or otherwise.
- Easily hackable to arcade use
- Graphics IMO close to or better than PS2

Also, SUPER CHEAP!!!!!    Seriously, DCs are $20 now, cheaper at garage sales or flea markets.  Grab one, you won't regret it.

There's a ton of great games (shoot 'em ups and fighters for me), hacking/modding the controllers are super easy, and..... I believe it was already mentioned that it's cheap!!!!

If you haven't looked before you may want to take a peak at the games lists (there's some good threads here and elsewhere), you may just find something you like!

I love my DC, one of the best systems I ever purchased!

EDIT: pointdablame just beat me to most of my points...

nice!

can I connect it to an arcade monitor?  I have a happs vision pro.

Is there aother type of odem that can be used other than the expensive name brand boradband modem?

Last question.......

Who sells the hacked controllers so I can connect it to a cp? Or do I need it.  I have a dedicated xbox/ps2 cab that is about 75% and what hey, I want to throw a dc in there based on what has been said.  I guess my only problem is I dont much about how to get a dc in there????

Haruman here on the boards hacks DC pads.  I've never dealt with him directly, but a ton of people say his work is great.

You can use a VGA box to hook a DC up to a PC monitor, or alter the VGA box slightly to output 15hz for arcade monitors.  IIRC, you only have to cut one wire.  Do a search, someone made a nice tutorial on it recently.

I'm not sure about the modem, I've only seen the Sega one personally

You could use one of these if you already have hacked PS2 controllers. You can probably find a couple on Ebay.

I have an ipac for my cp.  and so I would have to connect the DC to that.

Does BLAZE DC-X allow me to play back-up and downloaded games?  I am not sure if I need to buy mod chip or is just software?

If you have an Ipac and the PS2 adapters for that I think that the PS2 to DC controller adapters should still work just as hacked controllers would. I have never tried so I am not positive, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

you need.....nothing to play backups on dreamcast. most games are selfboot and doesnt require any swap or modchip. ipac with ps2 hookup should work fine with dreamcast converter as well(never tried though). as for video you get a dreamcast vga box and a vga switch box..check ebay.

you need a utopia boot disc for certain games though

the broadband adapters are like 130 us on ebay though you might be able to score a dc with one already with it.

But not many.

A Dreamcast is the best $20 you'll ever spend on gaming. Once you've had it for a while you'll be amazed that you paid so little for it.

So I can play back-up imports w/o having the DC modded?

What is the purpose of people getting it modded if you can play back-up with out?

there is no purpose of getting your dreamcast modded unless you wanna play legal store bought japnase games on american dreamcast. why do you think dreamcast is dead and buried...
