Title: Leaf Switch Composition
Post by: Searcher7 on May 06, 2006, 03:31:36 pm
Is anyone familiar with what leaf switches are made out of?

I'm assuming that phosphor-Bronze may be a chief component, but would appreciate any other ideas.

Thanks.

Darren

Noobs. You kill an elephant and carve them out of ivory.  ::)

Umm, guys ?  Searcher7 is hardly a "noob". He's been around here longer then both of you. He just doesn't post unless he truly needs help. Who knows, maybe he's looking to reproduce the almost non existant leaf switches for Wico joysticks and wants to know the exact materials that were used. Talk about non productive answers ::).
Searcher7, if I find anything I'll let you know. Are you talking about the metal leaf or the actual contact ? I'm assuming it's the ladder. At any rate, I'll do some investigating.

I was going to refer to a similar thread on RGVAC from 2003, but then I saw who started it ... ah well, we've exhausted my potential contribution.

Cheers.

Yeah, I've been working with these things on and off since the previous decade.

I now take it for granted that there will be a little immaturity everywhere you go.

I had used brass I got from a hobby show in my "Quick-Swap" control panel system, but I thought I may try to upgrade by making the contacts out of a better(the best) material.

Thanks.

Yeah I started that thread. :-)

But the answers were only guesses. :-(

Um, copper.

This kind of question goes way beyond the scope of putting together a mame cabinet.  But you could try salvaging the contacts off discarded relays, or check out Ponyboy's Leaf Switch Conversion thread.  Maybe he can give you a lead on where he gets his contacts.

It's hard to take statements like this seriously.  The kinds of questions you ask make people suspect you have no idea what you're talking about.  I suggest you buy Saint's book, read it through, and then ask if you still don't understand something.

For what it's worth, Searcher7 is one of the old foggies of this hobby . . .

My memory is so foggie, I can't even remember him   :laugh2:

What the heck do MAME(tm) cabinets have to do with ANYTHING ???

Perhaps by mere coincidence (or perhaps because it was a good idea that Ponyboy has delivered on), the first suggestion (that I am aware of) of the "leaf switch in a microswitch form factor" was made by Clay Cowgill in the 2003 RGVAC thread I referred to above, which was started by Searcher7.

I would suggest that perhaps you are the one not understanding ... *I* certainly thought he knew what he was asking.

Ideally they should be just a plain conducive metal but with gold plated contact points.
