Hey guys I don't know quite how this works, but I want to hook up 8 speakers (in ceiling kind) to my kenwood 5.1 reciever. I want every speaker to emmitt the same sound, as this is purely for music broadcasting throughout my 55 x 25 ft basement. I know i have read about people talking about ohms, and hooking speakers up in parallel? How would I go about this if it is at all possible? Thanks

You may not want to run it in 5.1 (if you even could). Most stereos have speakers A & B outputs. This allows you to select 2 different sets of speakers. Some stereos allow you to do A + B. This would allow for 2 runs of 8 ohms L & R.
This would give you 4 speakers but it would be stereo, so, if the music pans from right to left you will hear that effect in the room. A lot of the music informarion will be produced by all the speakers (unless it is early stereo albums like the beatles or Jimmi Hendricks with lots of hard panned instruments.
If you need more than 4 then it becomes a little more tricky. 2 speakers in parallel would get you 4 ohms. If you went 2 in series it would get you 16 ohms. What you need is a series parallel set up. 2 8ohm Speakers in series = 16 Devided by 2 (parallel) = 8 ohms.

This will give you 8 ohms. Remember that you are trying to power a bigger room with a home stereo. do not run it too hot or you could fry your amp.

the speakers I want to use are rated at 8 ohms impedence... Could someone draw me a diagram using series and parrallel speakers in order to get 8 of these speakers work together?

I already did. You get 4 for the left and 4 for the right.

Try this:
Homerun all the pairs of speakers back to your amplifer then buy an Impedance
Matching Device to control the output to the speakers. A unit like a RSS-4 made by Russound works very well. All you do is connect all the speakers to the outputs and then just connect the input to Spkr B on the receiver. All the speakers will be matched and the sound will be exactly the same.
It'll probably cost you about $80 for the unit.

Unless you are using a 5 ch stereo fake up, how would you get 5.1 from a stereo source. At best you could run it into Dolby Prologic and hope for some sort of seperation, but this is not 5.1.
I have a collection of SACD and DVD-a disks that are mixed for 5.1. But you need a CD/DVD player capable of decoding it. If you are running a true 5.1 system, there will be no .1 as there is nothing to tell the sub what to do.

Its true that you would not get 5.1 sound on the ceiling speakers. However, while you are in 5.1 surround mode in your home theater area, the receiver sends the same signal to Spkr B output that it sends to Spkr A output.
