I've found out that I can't even give away a NFL Blitz game so no I'm going to MAME it. As a newbie is there anything I should be aware of before I try to hook a pc up to a med res monitor. Peale pointed out that he's never heard of anyone using a medium rez.

Yeah, look for the jumper on the board to switch it to cga (standard ) resolution.
What model monitor is in it?

Yeah, if you're lucky enough to have a U5000 monitor, it's standard/medium switchable. Sucks to not be able to use it's max resolutions, but at least it would be usable.
On another note, why CAN'T we use meduium res monitors for Mame? No one has written a driver to get our vid cards to that rate? I figured it'd be easier to do 25KHz than 15KHz, but what do I know.

I don't see why we can't just using powerstrip and a Low Res Mode Calculator. That program calculates everything for you according to the resolution and refresh rate, so you should be able to set up something that works. Maybe someone with a Betson or a Wells multisync can try something like this since the monitor should sync up.

Very true indeed. I think the problem is the lack of demand for something like this, since I am sure that Andy could get in a couple of 25 kHz modes in the ArcadeVGA without a problem. If anything, I am sure you could sell that med res monitor to an operator that needs a replacement, and just use that cash to buy a standard res monitor, or hell, even trade the OP for it.

I have been asked many times about Medium Res and the ArcadeVGA card. Unfortunately I still have no plans to support this and I will explain why:
Basically the aim of the ArcadeVGA is to support as many MAME games as possible in their "native" resolutions, to give a pixel-perfect rendition. When used with a standard res monitor this is what it achieves. It will also run Windows at 640 X 480 interlaced and 800 X 600 interlaced so that Windows PC games can be used as well.
The problem with a 25Khz monitor is that it will not run any standard res games at all, in native resolution. It will also not run windows very well because the 400 line native resolution of a 25Khz monitor is not a divisor of any decent Windows resolution.
It would be possible to run 640 X 400 on a 25Khz monitor but virtually no Windows games would work. 1024 X 768 interlaced might be possible but the flicker might be too much to bear.
The only MAME games which would be supported in native mode on a 25Khz monitor would be those which originally ran on medium res, which are not that many.
Basically 25Khz monitors are just too limiting. It would be better to replace a 25Khz monitor with either a standard res arcade monitor or a VGA monitor.

Just curious, why would the flicker on 1024x768 interlaced be that much worse than 800x600 or 640x480 interlaced?
