Title: Wavy dark blotch (pics and video)
Post by: dougman on May 01, 2006, 11:19:15 am
Can someone tell me what is wrong with this CRT? It is just an arcade monitor (basic tube, almost no electronics, takes RGB+composite sync).

Even a general idea of what is wrong with it, would be good.  And a course of action. I am located in Vancouver BC.  Is there a repair guy that can fix it for me?

This CRT has a wavy dark blotch on the left side of the screen, If i turn up the contrast it will fade out a bit, when there is bright video playing, it will also kinda fade and move further off the screen. The wavy lines on the right seem to be present always, and will move around with the dark blotch.

I turned up the black level so you can see it more clearly.   Basically all dark colours displayed on the left side will turn black/really dark. Like when you play street fighter the title screen with the dark blue background you see a HUGE black wavy blotch on the left side of the screen.

looks like an electrolitic capacitor faulty, depends on your chassis type, what is your chassis model name and number?

Yup, looks like a capacitor problem on the monitor. You can take the monitor to "John's Jukes" (www.flippers.com) in Vancouver BC. He works on everything there: videos, pinballs, kiddie rides, jukeboxes, etc.

i think it is a zenith tube, i have to check when i get home, it seems pretty standard from looking at my other 2 arcade cabinets. I don't know much about arcade parts terminology. heh.

how much do you think it will cost to fix?
I bought this entire cab for like $250. :)
