Post by: lettuce on April 30, 2006, 10:49:37 am
If i want to mount the following sticks and spinner, under my 1/2 " MDF Contol Panel, what diameter do the holes need to be routed at, so the shafts fit and enough for normal joystick movement?

Happ Comeptetion stick
Happ 49 way
Groovygamegear turbo spinner??

I wouldn't route. Use a Forstner bit (my favorite) or a spade bit.
I find the 49 way works great with 1 1/4 inch, 1 1/8 will knock of the far corners if the joystick isn't centered perfectly. I assume the other Happ can just use a 1 1/8. The spinner need less then 1/2 inch.

What is a forstner bit:   http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-a-forstner-bit.htm

Pushbuttons use a 1 1/8 hole

This is the set I bought.

Usually a single bit will run you 25.

I've had great luck with Rockler. http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=6401 . Their router table is awesome, really solid, great attention to detail.  They have an add on for their Forstner bits (pictured below) that will help you get nice straight holes as well without a drill press. I think some of the more expensive bits are Carbon. Not sure how quick the steel ones dull cutting through MDF and Laminate.

Don't forget a 3/32 slot cut bit if you plan to apply T-molding (you won't find that one at Home Depot).

I would use a 1/16 bit.  The 3/32 will be too big unless you want to glue the t-molding in and not just tack it in.
