Title: How to transfer only "favorate" ROMS to old computer?
Post by: meany on April 26, 2006, 10:05:40 am
I have a full set of roms for mame already loaded on my XP machine.  I have received a hand me down old computer with only 5GB of space for roms.  I don't need the clone , adult or card game roms.  I know of the programs that delete these from a whole set but I want to create a folder with just "classic" roms without having to go through the roms and trying to figure out whats what and drag them to a new folder.

Is there an easy way to do this?

Make a list of what you want. open the roms folder, copy and paste. Seeing as these are all legal roms and you own the boards for these games, just move the boards and put them in a box next to the newly computer.

I guess the best way to do it would be to duplicate the roms folder on the XP machine and use one of the organizer programs on the new folder.

If your lazy, you could always try sorting the roms by size, then selecting 5 gigs worth of the roms, starting with the smallest ones.  That should make sure you have all the classics, but you'd probably also get a lot of non-working partial rom sets of newer games.

I could go through all the roms but the names of the roms are hard to match up to the games sometimes.

Using mame32 or mamewah as a front end you can see the name of the rom that's associated with the games you want.

In fact, you can sort or filter by year which can also help you narrow it down to classics
