None of the american cabinets had start buttons. The manual for TMNT lists the JAMMA pins for start as "not used'. I always thought that was amusing since once you drop a coin it flashes "press start."
I've seen pictures of the british cabinets (Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles) that appear to have some type of button above the control panel. It appears to be a square illuminated pushbutton from what I can tell.

Yeah thats the type, are the US cabs different then?
-
I have the US control panels for Xmen, Vendetta, and Turtles in time. In only one case did one of them (vendetta) have start buttons, and that was because the arcade owner wired in start buttons that were connected in parallel to the attack button. I can only assume that they are wired in parallel the same way, or the actual PCB's are different.

Heres a Vendetta cab for sale on ebay, as u can see it has the 4 start buttons. Im guessing in Mame when played on a normal desktop PC the Num lock, Caps etc lights on the keyboard would flash when u add a credit for TMNT??

I think you forgot the link ;)
And the US TMNT and Xmen did not have start buttons on the CP. The games started up with a coin insert and you chose your character.
You can get the start buttons anywhere. Happ, Ultimarc, Ponyboy, divemaster, and any other Happ distributor will carry them. They're a normally stocked Happ part.

TMHT (UK) 2 player needs start buttons as it seems to be designed for one coin slot
TMHT (UK) 4 player doesnt use the start buttons as it seems to be designed for four coin slots
I experiemented with mame, feel free to see for yourself.

If you still want those illuminated rectangle buttons I know Ozstick here in Australia sell them, follow the link http://www.ozstick.com.au/prod_btns.html (http://www.ozstick.com.au/prod_btns.html)

These are the style of start button found on Aussie TMNT cabs as well as Simpsons Cabs, which were both distributed by leasure and allied, the mob who own TimeZone.

minor sticking point: The only game where you select your character in a 4p konami cab was x-men. In TMNT your character is chosen by the controls you choose. In the X-men 6p version the controls similarly determine the the character.

True, but that has absolutely no bearing on my statement that there are no start buttons on the control panel. And TECHNICALLY, you inserted your coin in teh corresponding slot, but you still had to press attack to start the game with that character... so you'd put in a coin and chose the character that corresponded to the coin slot. ;)

The buttons on the front of that Simpsons control panel are not original, they had to be added by the op.

yup, horrible place for buttons as well (if you ask me)... You might want to add a 1P and 2P for switching games, but 1-4 (unevenly spaced to boot) just makes no sense.

As u can see, only one coin slot, and 4 start buttons. In regards to which player u would be, i think it work out that which ever player button u press thats the player u would be. IE is u press player 1 start button u would be leonardo, player 3 start button Donatello etc
