Yo,
I just wired up some cheap PSX controllers to some Happs buttons/8-way joysticks and put them in my control panel (with the appropriate adaptors I have, I can use these controllers/control panel with PC, XBOX, Gamecube, PS2, and Dreamcast). This is a 2 player panel. Buttons X, O, Square, Triangle, L1, and R1 are mapped to buttons 1-6 in MAME, Select (located under the 6 main buttons) is Coin, Start is Start (duh), and L2 and R2 I want as admin buttons (Player 1 L2/R2 and Player 2 L2/R2 make for a total of 4 admin buttons).
I want as admin buttons TAB, ESC, Pause, and Enter. Mapping Pause and Enter is no sweat, but how would I map TAB and ESC to my buttons? Is there some way (.ini file or otherwise) to use alternatives to TAB and ESC that perform the same function?
I know similar posts have been asked about this (believe me, I did do a thorough search on this site and on Google), but they involve IPAC and keyboard which I don't wanna use since I'd like to be able to control everything with my control panel and PSX pads.
Thanx!

just hit TAB, push ENTER on CONFIG MENU (TAB) and push the button you want and do the same thing for UI_CANCEL (ESC) and hit the button you wnat assign to it, all this are under the INPUT GENERAL/User interface settting section.

Thanx for the info!
How about the TAB key?

Sounds like you configuring directly in mame, but for those that haven't, and just use an adaptor, there is a program called Joy2Key which will convert joystick button presses to keycodes:

Useful when the frontend isn't joystick friendly.

Thanks for the suggestion on joy2key and while I have considered it before, I would much rather be able to assign buttons within emulators.
Now is there any way to have the TAB button reassignable to some other button?

i already mentioned it above. When you are in General/user interface, select the one that says CONFIG MENU (default is assign to TAB)., hit enter and assign to WHATEVER YOU WANT.
