This has to be BS or they are using their own emulation "like MAME."

Interesting. As far as getting the rights to the games, I'm sure Microsoft has a lot more pull than StarRoms could have had. Companies like Namco are going to be a lot more receptive to things like this when you combine the Xbox name with the relative ease of ordering things on Xbox Live, not to mention the locked-to-a-Xbox-Live-gamertag security... seems like a no-brainer.
As far as calling it MAME, well, I'm sure they're not actually going to be using MAME.
-
Yeah, you can't take the article seriously, it could be a fake. I mentioned this on mame.net and Haze said most likely, if they were smart, they would just be looking at the source for mame to come up with their own emulator that is legal.
-
The original source for this story is from Spong.com. For anybody that's been following the game industry for a while knows that this is a horrible site in regards to reputation.
Spong.com makes up hundreds of lies and when they don't pan out they later claim that the project was scrapped. If one of their "inside sources" (see: BS speculation) turns out to happen, they try to use it as proof that they are reputable. Getting 1/100 correct isn't very good...
Besides, licensing MAME would have to be nightmare, wouldn't it?

Is the Xbox Live Arcade a console like the previous Xbox systems?

Xbox Live Arcade is a program that runs on your Xbox or Xbox 360. The program allows you to download small and short new games like Geometry Wars and classic games like Joust or Smash TV. Xbox Live Arcade is in every Xbox 360, for the original Xbox you need to install it with a CD.

I didn't think that Xbox Live Arcade on the 360 worked with the original Xbox Live Arcade... I'll have to throw in my disc and check that out.

I think there are two different versions of Xbox Live Arcade (one for the xbox and one for the 360).
Going back to the original posted topic: If the lie was true that Microsoft did some how get MAME on the 360, you would be lacking the proper controls for playing the games.

No you wouldn't. They would only be using it for licensed games so they would only license games that could be controlled with a controller. Which does amount to most of the arcade games.
-
The more I think about it, what game couldn't you control with the Xbox controller? You've got the d-pad, two analog sticks, plenty of buttons... Even Robotron plays well from what I hear.

spiner and 360 steering wheel games.

Sorry, I didn't realize how others would interpet my post. By saying that you would lack the proper controls, I meant the Xbox 360 controller is no substitute for a real arcade control panel. I feel arcade games should be played with joysticks, buttons, a spinner and a trackball. Given the choice I would much rather play MAME on a custom built arcade cabinet then on my 360.
