Title: New mame and old roms?

I am thinking of upgrading my version of mame as i have an old 0.97 version i have the corosponding rom set. my question is if i ungrade to the latest version of mame can i still use my old roms set with it or will the games not work anymore?

it depends. If THE GAME has been updated/fixed/retouch/rename/remove/etc., then it won't work.

So say streetfighter games will be pretty much the same just things like the virtua striker type games will be updated?

The majority of roms will remain unchanged however some do change based on a better dump of a game board, or fixing encryption, fixing errors etc.  Best way is to use a rom manager to verify the set against the new version of mame - it will tell you which are wrongly named, changed or missing.  Some of the changed ones can be fixed with the manager as well to make them workable with the newer mame version.
