Title: I-PAC & Happ sticks??
Post by: lettuce on April 19, 2006, 12:30:47 pm
Can use a I-PAC to hook Happ 49-way & Rotary sticks up to my PC, or is another interface needed?

You need the GP49Wiz for the 49 ways.  If you have the optical rotaries, you will need an ipac (or similar) encoder for the microswitch portion and an Optipac (or similar) for the optical portion.

What if i just have the standard Rotary stick and not optical, and whats the difference bewteen the 2. Also how does the 49-way stick feel when using is as a standard 8 way stick?

One uses a mechanical switch, the other uses optics (like a spinner).  You still need an interface such as Druins (& a keyboard encoder) to interface a mechanical rotary.  Mechanical rotaries have clicks you can feel when rotating, optical ones don't.

OK, a bit sloppy perhaps.  I found it works great for stuff like shooters, not so well for things where accuracy is important such as fighters - still playable tho.

So hooking up a rotary or optical, is no different, you still need a unit like Druins and a keyboard encoder (I-PAC or GP49Wiz). One or the other isnt better when using with mame??

Mechanical needs a Druin's or Rdagger board.  Optical needs an Opti-Pac or Opti-Wiz.  49-Way needs a GP-49 Wiz.

BTW, Floyd has a conversion for attaching the mechanical rotary base to a 49-way joystick.

Optical tends to work better in MAME, but mechanical is more authentic.

Cheers, so if i get a 49-Way stick all i need to get is Floyd's conversion to get it to act as a rotary stick too? Does this option work well with mame? Wheres a link to floyd's device?

And a Druin or Rdagger board - to do it easily.

As well as any mechanical joystick.  You will get occasional missed clicks.
