I have noticed that most of the driving games in my mame set up are close to unplayable. All the newer ones anyway, Crusin' USA, Rush The Rock, Sega GT, Ridge Racer, etc. They run at like 2 frames a second. I updated Mame, got the newest ROMs, and tried GameEX, AtomicFE, and even Mame32--same results. I have a P4 @3ghz, x700 PCI express GPU, and 2g ram..it runs most things VERY well. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!
Brian

There's another thread somewhere on this forum about someone who got Cruisin USA/World to run at full speed. I haven't really checked it out in depth though. From what I understand, since MAME isn't designed for speed (more for accuracy) getting some of these games to run at full speed is beyond the capabilties of computers currently on the market. Evidently, some of the Midway games are a :censored: to emulate.

Why are people making MAME Driving cabinets then, if so many of the MAME driving games are unplayable? Am I missing something?

You answered your own question. I think for a significant number of people building cabinets, arcade games peaked around 1984. If I had the space I would absolutely build a Pole Position driving cab.

You can increase your FPS by changing frameskipping to zero. That'll help some.
What resolution are you trying to get things to run at? Lower resolutions mean more framerate.
Also, as said before, these games will *not* run fullspeed until there are far faster computers.
