Title: newbie: check out my cabinet so-far
Post by: daver on April 17, 2006, 05:30:34 pm
hi all!, well after seeing a neighbor working on a cabinet, I decided to take the plunge, so after about 10 hours of work here is what I have.

Let me know what ya think, and any suggestions you might have, thanks!

Having no wood working skills myself, I say great job!  Keep us updated as you progress.

What are your plans for covering it?  Paint?

Looks nice.  One thing I would suggest is maybe putting a couple additional 2X4s lengthwise under the monitor shelf for both additional monitor support and to help minimze 'swaying' of the entire cabinet.

It looks great but you need to have this thread deleted or moved to the Project Announcement Forum

That certainly wouldn't hurt anything, but what you have will support the monitor fine and when the back is on, it shouldn't sway.

sorry for posting in the incorrect group, thats for the tips, I am pretty surprised how the cabinet dosent really sway at all, i have a ton of l-brackets in there, i also found a local dealer, got a HAPP 3" trackball for $80 and a bracket for $11 and 2 ultimate joysticks for $17 they sell on ebay also, really nice guy. I am adding my pic with the trackball and the controls in the CP.

thanks guys, my father-in-law has a table saw, and that really helped me get a lot done faster, i got the plans from arcadeparadise.org the CP has taken me about 5 hours, but I only started this project about 3 weeks ago. So I am very pleased at the progress so far. It wont be as fancy as some of the cabs on here, but for my first I am just getting the general feel of everything.

Great start, however you may want to re-do the control panel buttons - they are a little far from each other. I did the same thing, and once I moved the buttons closer, my fingers thanked me...

luckily I have some extra MDF so I guess I can experiment with different layouts, I might cut another CP and play around with hole locations, thanks for the advice!

Looks great!

The only other thing I might be worried about is with the CP as well.  Looks like you are going to put a trackball in the center?  Hard to tell from the pics, but be carefull that it won't extend past the front inside edge of your cp box...and also that the box is deep enough at the front to hold the whole assembly.

It's a decent lookin cabinet. I recommend placing the buttons 1 1/2" apart on center especially if you use the capcom 6 layout. This places them perfectly spaced apart so you can reach all of them with no need to look at the panel.

thank you for the advice everyone, i definately will try a few different CP layouts, since i have more than enough MDF left over, i just got done putting a coat of primer on, and I just bought a IPAC2 from a user here, so hopefully by the weekend i will at least be able to test everything out!

The first painted pic, you can see the brush/roller marks clearly. Did those go away with additional coats or is it something you only see in bright light? I'm not at the painting stage yet, so I'm curious.
