Title: Sega cocktail control panels - where can I get some?
Post by: pointdablame on April 16, 2006, 09:55:01 pm
So, I was able to score a free Sega cocktail from asantora (thanks to him and also SithMaster for picking the thing up)  You can see a pic of it here. (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=52359.0;attach=45155;image)

There is absolutely nothing in it except a partial coin door assembly, so I think this bad boy is going to get a (hopefully cheap) MAME conversion.  Problem is:  no control panels.  I've taken a look at the area and can probably make some panels out of wood, but would prefer to get some panels if I can.

Does anyone know of a place that sells panels, either original or replicas?  Or maybe plans for original panels?  I'll likely make a WTB thread in B/S/T soon also, but figured I'd get some info on it first.

Don't know but Level42 bought a similar style cab recently. Maybe he could help with the CP dimensions.

It looks like it was fitted with vertical control panels, although personally I'd try to hack in some horizontal panels if there is enough room.

Very nice looking cab BTW. I didn't realise Sega made cocktails. I thought that style was only made by Taito.

Also, there seems to be an unusually large space for the monitor to sit in. Could you provide some dimensions?

I'll see if I can get a hold of Level42 to see if he can help.  I don't mind making some myself, although I won't be able to fab some metal panels if that's what they originally had. (I'm a total n00b with cocktails)

The monitor bezel can rotate to be either horizontal or vertical, so I'm not going to hack any panels to the other end of the machine, I'll just stick with the two that are there.  I already have an upright horizontal cab planned (and I'll actually keep this one!) so this will more than likely be a dedicated vertical cocktail with just the classics, and maybe some shmups if I can scrounge up a decent speed computer.

It's got a Sega tag in it, so that's what I'm going by.  The Asteroids Deluxe picture on KLOV (here (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=6940)) looks just like it, so who knows what it was originally.  I'm pretty sure the Taito cabs are a bit different since the control panels were on the face of the machine, and not really a dedicated "panel" so to speak.  I could be wrong though.

As for space, it seems bigger than it is.  The area where the coin door is has a large shelf and for the most part, completely takes up the right side of the machine.  I'll get some dimensions this weekend though when I will hopefully be home and have some time to clean it up and figure out my next move.  I think I'll have enough room to sit a PC monitor in it, but it may be a bit shallow... we'll have to see.

Heya Pete,

Got your PM. Replied here because others may be interested too. My cocktail actualy is a Tehkan Pleiads. However, it looks VERY much like the Taito cocktails, and my bet is that it is from the some manufacturer. Sadly, I don't think it looks very much like your Sega.

The cp on my cocktail looks to be much higher than the space on your Sega.

Here's my original thread about my Tehkan:

and this is about a Taito one, it looks SO much the same:

I think SEGA parts should be around at Happ maybe ? I know Suzo UK is official Sega parts distributor (NOT in Holland though).

Hello, I was the guy who was supposed to get that cocktail. About (5:00 pm) 30 minutes before I was going to leave to go to asantora's house, I called him to make sure everything was still ok. He informed me he had family problems that he had to tend to and that he would call me back to reschedule the time. Around 8:00 pm that night he pm'ed me saying the cocktail was gone and he was sorry something came up ??? I am not really angry, I just read this post and it left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth. Thanks for letting me vent  Anyway good luck with the cocktail PDB.

@ Level42 - Thanks for replying.  Your cab looks exactly like that Taito.  I wouldn't be surprised if they are the same like you said.  They definitely have different style CPs though, so I'll have to keep looking.

I found some "universal" cocktail control panels on eBay thanks to a PM from someone here (I apologize, I forget who off hand), but the seller took a look at them and they wouldn't fit my cab, so the search continues I suppose.

@ lordtodd - Sorry about that, I certainly didn't mean to step on your toes.  I actually stood no chance of getting the machine if it wasn't for SithMaster who just happens to live very close to my home.  I was at school with no vehicle, and told him that if it happened to be available, I would love to have it.  Sorry again.

I'm going to keep an eye on eBay some more I guess, since google hasn't really turned much up in the way of parts.  I doubt I'll find a place selling them really, but I was hoping someone may have had a lead on them or had some extras.

If not, there are mounting holes in the cutout for the CP, and I'm pretty sure I'd be able to make a wood box for it with little trouble.  I'd just love to get some original measurements to see what it had on it from the start.  My guess is it was a metal CP, but maybe it had a wood box?  Like I said, I'm a newb when it comes to cocktails, so I have no clue what SHOULD be there.  Unfortunately I won't get any real chunk of time with it until the semester is over, but maybe I can track down some CPs in that time :)
