So there I was the other day, extolling the virtues of Ikaruga. We actually have a Naomi platform that's not being used at the moment, so I thought we could convert one of our vertical games into a shiny new Ikaruga box.
Did a brief search, OMG like $800! That includes the hardware, but all I need is the disc and the key.
(also, I know next to nothing about Naomi so far, haven't had the opportunity to play with it yet).

www.fillmoregames.com
excellent service, I bought 3rd strike here.

$137: http://www.coinopexpress.com
No idea on shipping, but it's cheap at least.

S&H: 60-80 to the USA

$60-80 isn't TOO bad from HK. Except it's a bloody DISK. I'd expect that for a whole system, not a disc.
Hmmmm...I tried Radient Silvergun in Mame the other day...that was quite cool.
We have some Die Hard Arcade machines that will be coming off location in a bit...I think the hardware is the same....
-
I believe Die hard Arcade is STV.

Yeah, I knew it wasn't Naomi.
-
Bummer - I sold an Ikaruga disc and chip just a month or two ago!

I got that quote to ship a PCB from them, but I doubt thatwould cost much less...

I have the GameCube version of Ikaruga and strangely it offers an option to rotate the screen 90 degrees for vertical monitors.... (hmmmm)

Hey, psst...tell me more :o
-
What do you want to know? That I love the game and would never part with it? Nope, sorry, I find it too hard and have not touched it in two years.
;D

Dreamcast version does the same thing. And it works. Looks balls cool.

What do you want to know?
No, is there a US version?

Ikaruga has been out in the US for quite some time now.
-
Yes, my GameCube Ikaruga is a North American release.
I was told it was rare, yet I see it pretty much everywhere.
-
So is the arcade version two player?
-
Nobody?
Also, is there a USA version and a Japanese version? I finally asked the boss about it, and he's reluctant because he figures it'll have Japanese instructions. I personally don't think that's a big deal, because...well, it's a schmup. Not a big learning curve, there.

Yes Peale the arcade GD-ROM is two player. I may even have a spare in storage but I may not make it there to check for a couple of days. You could throw a post on the forums at SEGA-NAOMI.com (http://www.sega-naomi.com) and you'll likely find someone parting with one. I agree its a great game.
The price on this GD-ROM has really dropped as of late. It used to run $150 about a year ago.
Yahoo Japan you can also usually find an IKARUGA on auction.

The beatiful thing about NAOMI games is that the language in most / all of the games is dictated by the BIOS that is in the NAOMI mainboard. IKARUGA is playable on all NAOMI BIOS versions US / JPN / EXP both US and EXP display in English. The NAOMI original game is however VERTICAL only (helpful to know).

It is two player...that actually bites. Had a plan to stick it in a cockpit, which only fits one person.
I'd love to get it to play with it. Heck I want to sell the boss on it. We just spend a few G on a Need For Speed, I would love to get an awesome shooter to show off.
Does this run on a medium or standard res monitor?
-
Well, you could always only play it as one player. As far as I recall, Naomi games can be switched between standard and high resolution, though there are a couple that do not support both.
-
The NAOMI mainboard does in fact have dip switches that set between std and medium res. I have a PDF of the manual for std NAOMI1 mainboard if you want to take a peek. It is two player but as mentioned just use a 1player CP it's not like two player is split screen etc you still get the full screen real estate.
-

True, but if some idiot puts in more quarters than needed for one player, won't it say 'Press One or Two Players' on screen?
-
It'd have some small bit in the upper right hand corner of the screen about joining yes.
-
You could always put in a poor mans NAOMI (Dreamcast) which wont say anything unless player two hit the start button. Both the MGCD and the Excellentcom 'Super' have a play by credit setting with on screen overlays.
When I am finished moving I can have my Dreamcast vertical cab and my WIndy (vertical) next to each other for side by side comparison DC vs NAOMI but as someone who owns both I can tell you that you wouldn't see any game plat difference.
Of course I'd always endorse someone going the route of original arcade hardware. I dont think it'd be that noticeable with the original hardware if someone put in multiple quarters that the game is two player capable.

Can you play Dreamcast discs on Naomi?
-
Nope! The world would be such a nicer place if that was the case!
