Title: Xport Emulators and Screenshots on xbox?
Post by: Timoe on April 15, 2006, 07:30:26 pm
I'm having trouble getting my screenshot sets to work with Xport emulators on xbox.

My screenshots are good and named correctly. But they dont show up in say, NeoGenesis for example.

Neogenesis has the option to take a screenshot.  So I do this to test my directory settings.  Sure enough when I check the directory location there is a new file there named "GENESIS" and inside is another folder named after the game I was playing and inside of that there is a file named "0001.png"

Do I need to convert all my screenshot file's names to folders with the same name and then rename the image name to 00001.png or what?

that would take forever.  There must be an easier way.

You nailed it
"Do I need to convert all my screenshot file's names to folders with the same name and then rename the image name to 00001.png or what?"

Over on xbox scene there was a few people working together to try to make sets but havent heard much of that in a long time  ???

I too would like to see screenshots in my emu's but the amount of time it would take would be out of this world.
So I just made up a nice default pic to look at

What exactly is the issue?  If each rom screen must be placed in a folder named after the rom with the screen named 00001.png, it would be trivial to whip up a program to rename them.  Here's an example to see if I understand this right:

GENESIS ROMS
==========

3 ninjas kick back (u) [!].bin --> 3 ninjas kick back (u) [!]\00001.png
36 great holes starring fred couples 32x (ju) [!].bin --> 36 great holes starring fred couples 32x (ju) [!]\00001.png
688 attack sub (u) [!].bin --> 688 attack sub (u) [!].bin\00001.png
addams family, the (ue) [!].bin --> addams family, the (ue) [!].bin\3.png
...

Anyway, if that's the problem, I can make a program.  If it's not, which seems likely, let me know what the proper format is, and I'll see what I can do.

I gotta say though, what were the creators of this system thinking?  Perhaps they don't have large rom collections.

Thats it exactly.  Can you help?  The community could use the help for sure.  Here's the deal.

I have a huge set of screenshot files which all work and are named correctly for use with emulators on the PC.

But I could use a little program that generates a folder with the same name as the source file, then renames the source file "0001.png" and inserts it into the new folder.

like this

3 ninjas kick back (u) [!].png --> 3 ninjas kick back (u) [!]\00001.png

I'd have to check on the number of zeros though.  I can do this tonight.

Yes, I can help.  Let me know on the final format and I'll have something ready to go within the next week.

Let me know if I can post a link to this thread over at xbox-scene.com once you're done.  I'll bet there are a lot of people out there that will appreciate your efforts.

I made a Windows command line application that should do the trick.  It copies your existing screenshots to a new folder in the XPort format.

http://www-personal.engin.umich.edu/~stevebec/XPortScreenShotConverter.exe

Run it like so:

XPortScreenShotConverter <source directory> <destination directory>

It requires 2 parameters.  The first parameter is a valid path to your screenshot directory.  The second parameter is where the screenshots are copied in the new format.  Here's an example:

XPortScreenShotConverter C:\Emulators\NES\NES_Screenshots C:\XPort\ScreenShots\NES

I assume the source directory is a directory full of screenshots.  For example, C:\Emulators\NES\NES_Screenshots contains:

3-D Battles of World Runner, The (U).PNG
8 Eyes (U).png
10-Yard Fight (U).png
.
.
.
Zombie Nation (U).png

Let me know if you have any problems.  Also, feel free to share this with anyone.

I'm glad it helped!  There's been a request for more detailed instructions so here they are:

1) download the file above to C:\

2) Go to the Windows Start Menu and select Run...

3) Type cmd and press enter

4) Type cd ..\.. and press enter.  The command prompt should say: C:\>

5) Follow the instructions above.  Type XPortScreenShotConverter <source screenshots> <renamed screenshots destination>.  For example, you could type "XPortScreenShotConverter C:\Emulators\NES\NES_Screenshots C:\XPort\ScreenShots\NES" and then press enter.

The source screenshots is a path to a directory full of existing screenshots like C:\emulators\NES\Screens.  The renamed screenshots destination is where your existing screenshots will be copied to with their new name and format.

Let me know if you have any more questions.  Sorry it's a command line app.  I am reluctant to create the world's ugliest UI to go with it.

Yeah their is something else .

In order to have multiple screens like my setup you need to rename the 0001.png's to 0002.png and etc. . Could you make some different files that named them 0002.png and 0003.png .

It is not a huge deal becasue as of now I can use a program called mrrename which is .net based so it is drag and drop . But it is kind of a pain to search the folder and drag them all in there .

I am no dos expert but i would assume this is just a matter of changing one number and recompiling .

EDIT: spelling

I altered it so you can specify a number for the filename.  It works exactly the same as before, except there is an additional optional parameter.

XPortScreenShotConverter <source screenshots> <renamed screenshots destination> <number>

Example:

XPortScreenShotConverter C:\Emulators\NES\NES_Screenshots C:\XPort\ScreenShots\NES 2

for 0002.png

If the number is not specified, it uses 1 by default.

Glad it helped.  While I appreciate the offer, I am not looking for donatations.  Like I said earlier, it was fairly easy to create.

Hi folks,

I was pointed to this thread via xbox-scene, and I thought I'd come over here and use this opportunity to promote this site as well. It's dedicated to everything xbox emulation related:  (screenshots, box art, emulator skins, cheats, etc)

http://xbox.nugnugnug.com

I've just uploaded this renamer tool to the site, now we have 3 of them.  heh.

Hopefully you'll find some goodies here that you can use with your own projects.

*bump*

http://xbox.nugnugnug.com seems to be gone these days, so does anyone have a copy of this program (XPortScreenShotConverter.exe) they could send me or upload? (original link is broken too).

Thanks!  ;D

I'm the former owner of that site.  It was taken down because we were exceeding bandwidth and the host was getting peeved at the amount of pipe we were using.

If you can't find it I've come up with another way of accomplishing this.  You'll need two things, "Renamer" by "Den4b" and the batch file I've attached.

*note you'll have to rename "put all in folders.txt" to "put all in folders.bat"  DO NOT RUN IN A FOLDER OTHER THAN YOUR SCREENSHOT FOLDER  what will happen is it will put every file into a folder named after the original file!

What you'll do is this:
Make sure your screenshots are named exactly the same as your roms.
Drop the "put all in folders.bat" file into the same folder as your screenshots.
Run the batch file.
You will now have a folder for each of the screenshots that you started with and inside each of those folders will be that screenshot.
Run Renamer
Select all the folders that contain your screenshots and drag them onto the lower pane of Renamer
Click the "+ Add" button and add the following two rules:
Delete: From Position 1 - Until Till the end making sure Skip extension is checked
Insert: What:0001 or whatever number you're on in the format the emulators are looking for.

That may have sounded complicated but once you've done it once you'll be doing it faster than it took you to read it the first time.  Plus Den4b's renamer is a very useful program that you'll find yourself using all the time.

Again I have to stress not to run the "put all in folders.bat" anywhere that you don't intend all of the contents to be moved into subdirectories.  I store it in a rar file when I'm not using it so I don't accidentally run it.
